Hooniverse Asks- Is your Daily Driver Your Home Away From Home?

Home

Do you live in your car? Now, I don’t mean live in it in the fashion of being one step away from homelessness, which would be tragic. No, I mean do you maintain your car as an extension of your home, with certain accouterments that might not otherwise find their way in there?

My wife for example keeps in her car massive quantities of cassette tapes, bottled water, extra clothes, and a multitude of other stuff that I simply find it impossible to catalog. Others may keep pictures of loved ones stuck in amongst the gauges, or perhaps a library of reading material for traffic delays.

What about you, do you maintain your car as an extension of your home, or do you keep a firewall between the two, and never the twain shall meet? How do you roll, is your daily driver your home away from home?

My vehicles generally have better sound systems than my house, because I listen to music in my vehicles more than at home.

My car is much, much cleaner than my house. I don’t keep much in it. I have gloves in the glove box. I have tissues and Advil in the console, and a pair of sunglasses in the nook beneath the radio. It’s a little different if I’m planning a long trip, but that is all that is typically in there.
My truck is a bit different. I carry quite an array of “stuff” in my truck, but it all suits the truck’s purpose. Towing lights, trailer hitches of various sizes, spare oil, spare transmission fluid, spare light bulbs, tools… it’s really like my garage away from my garage.

Wait a minute… you actually have gloves in your glove box? I think you are one of the few people who uses that feature exactly as it is intended.

I keep a pair of work gloves in the upper glove box of my truck. They keep the Glock from sliding around.

My wife uses the glove box as a filing cabinetfor almost everything that comes in the mail.

No, not at all. The only stuff that stays in my car overnight is what belongs to the car — iPod, window scraper, flashlight, sun shade, a couple of quarts of oil, The Club.

I'm pretty much the same. There's not any non car stuff that stays in my truck for very long.

Same here. I have a GPS in the console (which my wife no longer uses, thanks to her iPhone), tools and a flashlight under the back seat, and a couple of tape measures, for when I go to the home improvement stores. And a squeegee for wiping the windows in the winter months (since it doesn't get to stay in the garage) That's pretty much it.

My car is quite uncluttered unlike this '56 Cadillac which has everything, including the kitchen sink. http://www.treehugger.com/cars/kitchen-sink-cadil

More than likely. I've posted it several times in several places. I love it.

My truck isn't so much of a home away from home now that my commute is only about 15 minutes. When I have a 1-1/2 to 2 hour commute my car was a little more cluttered to say the least. I do keep a lot of stuff in the truck, but most o fit is semi-useful: hand sanitizer, spare diaper bag for the little one, large pack of gum, gloves, a spare bottle of water, that type of thing. There is some other stuff in the storage compartment under the rear seat: Jumper cables, tools, 12v air compressor, etc.

I go back and forth. Sometimes I'll carry a ton of stuff, clothes, books, food, all kinds of crap. Then I'll feel like a slob and go on a cleaning binge and keep it cleaned out for a few weeks before I backslide. This is why auto-x season is a good thing, gives me a reason to clean out my car really well every couple of weeks. Gotta keep that weight down 🙂

Depending upon what's going on, my pickup may be an extension of my garage with a bunch of tools locked in the back. It's not my DD and if I have a big project away from home, it's more convenient not to have to load them up every day.
But generally, no. I thoroughly empty my car at least once a week.

Yes. Any my truck is defitly an extension of my office.
My car an '07 Focus ZX5 is like my apartment: a little cluttered, but not unreasonably messy
My work truck: a 2013 Internatioal DuraCrap is like the ware house: A few odds & ends, but everything is close to the right place. Of course, that's just the cab. I'm downright anal about how the cargo gets loaded.

I just went through my van (2000 Voyager base) yesterday and cleaned everything out. It's amazing how many little bits of crushed gravel your shoes track in from the driveway.
Now the only sizable things in there beside the front seats/center console, are the rear seat and a set of jumper leads, plus a thing of fixaflat, and a mini-air compressor stuffed into the rear storage bins. For music I just have a cassette adapter permanently lodged in the tape deck (eject mechanism is jammed.)

I don't have a daily driver right now as my E30 has now crossed the too ridiculous to daily drive line but I slept in the back seat of it for the first time last year after having way too many beers out in the middle of nowhere. After that experience, it's safe to say it is not a suitable home away from home. I also keep it pretty empty so there's less to take out when I go lapping / autocrossing.

No. If you open a brochure of a Peugeot 106 and look at the interior, that's exactly what my interior looks like.
I don't live in my car and when I eat or drink in my car I chuck the junk in the trash straight after I've finished!

I just went and checked. In the cab of my truck I have two jackets, my CD's, a pair of gloves, and a dusty old laptop that's going to be recycled soon. In the toolbox I have my tools, tiedowns, bungee cords, two old blankets, a tarp, and two camping chairs.
It just dawned on me that I have enough gear to go camping on a whim. Nice!

I just keep an inverter, GPS, chargers, maybe a CD or three, some towels, a spare bike tire, bike lock, and some other small things in my Explorer. I have slept in it twice. Fits me perfectly with the back seat down.

Flashlight, dorky prescription sunglasses, some change in the ashtray, lighter, ice scraper, rag for checking the oil.
I always feel like I should carry some basic tools, but let's face it, I could carry 50lbs of tools and still not have the one I need (or the right replacement part) when something goes wrong.

  20. jeepjeff Avatar

No. I live in an area with a lot of break-ins and street park a soft-top. That means my Jeep is kept extremely tidy, and I leave nothing in plain sight. Which means the stuff that stays out there full time is minimal. I have a first-aid kit under the driver's seat, and because the provided lug-nut wrench sucks and the extended jack handle is missing, I keep a breaker-bar with the right socket for the lugnuts in the well next to the door sill. There's a few things in the glove box (transponder for the toll bridges, maintenance/gas log, manual, lighter and a few other odds and ends).

I've always been of the opinion that if the car is completely empty of everything – including trash, tissue boxes, etc – the unsavory types will assume the areas they can't see are just as empty, and move on to another car.
It's worked so far. Of course this habit may also be partially related to the fact that I at one point lived in a bad neighborhood with a van that didn't lock.

The boot of my car is full of stuff for my motorcycle but otherwise the inside of the RX-8 is small enough without being cluttered with junk other than maps and coffee cups. Plus I live in the petty crime capital of my city, so anything that looks like it could be turned into crack gets stolen via broken windows.

The new NJ Transit cars are Bi-level as well. Occasionally, my line nears triple digit speeds, but he NEC trains hit 100 between Princeton Junction and New Brunswick pretty regularly.

I like my home – it's a decent sized unit in a century building in a great neighbourhood. It has hardwood floors, and character, and it's kept fairly clean. My daily driver is nothing like that.
Now, dreary, grey, cheap fabrics and plastic, littered with coffee cups and power cables for umpteen different devices and assorted work documents, with the same dozen or so songs playing on virtual repeat on a tinny radio? My daily driver is definitely a rolling cubicle.

When I commuted by car, and was childless, the car was full of CDs and otherwise SPOTLESS. I used to live in it, but wipe it down regularly.
Now, it is a bit empty, just a rearguard campaign by me against my two boys, my wife, and the landfill of filth they create.

Hmm it looks like your blog ate my first comment (it
was super long) so I guess I’ll just sum it up what I had written and say, I’m thoroughly enjoying
your blog. I as well am an aspiring blog writer but I’m still new
to everything. Do you have any tips and hints for novice blog
    writers? I’d definitely appreciate it.
