Here is a map of state gasoline taxes (diesel is taxed at different rates) for every state in the Union. Fuel taxes are intended to be a direct consumption tax – the revenues collected going to support the infrastructure (roads and bridges, etc) upon which the fuel is typically used. Of course, that means when I’m mowing my lawn I’m subsidizing everyone else on the street. It doesn’t always work out that the taxes collected at the pump end up – just like hookers – working on the street. A number of states have used the money for things other than road improvements. That doesn’t seem fair, but then a lot of people don’t like the idea of taxes at all. As they say, just like death, taxes are inevitable. Check out the map above – or the interactive map here – and see how much you’re paying. For those of you living outside the states, how much do you pay on top of what you’re giving the oil companies? Also, this is just for everyone’s edification, let’s keep the political commentary both civil and to a minimum, m’kay? Image: API.com
