False Neutral #34: Alternative Suspension

fn-podcast-34

Eric, Garrett and I get technical this week, discussing alternative motorcycle suspension and steering technology. From springer and girder front ends to leading link forks to anti-dive devices, we talk about what worked, what didn’t work, and what the motorcycle industry has abandoned and come back to later. I kinda geek out slightly here and there.

I’m glad to the BMW Oilheads got a mention. The R1100RS’ combination of a Hossack style front end, stressed engine and articulated swing arm was very advanced for 1993, and perhaps more significantly they were the first commercially successful design unlike the contemporary Yamaha GTS100 and Bimota Tesi.
