Encyclopedia Hoonatica: Native American Names

image
I’m on the road this week, and as I was crossing a Sioux reservation in North Dakota, I was thinking about the many Native American names that have become commonly known parts of our lexicon.
Nowadays, corporate use of proper tribal names or even general references to indigenous peoples is rather a touchy subject, and in the past has resulted I some rather cringe-worthy marketing elements. However, the re-introduced Jeep Cherokee shows it is not quite an extinct practice.
Today your task is to name all the vehicles named (generally or specifically) after Native American (First Nations/aboriginal) people.
Difficulty: Super easy; even the low-hanging fruit could feed us all.

I figured the Dakota would be the least obvious of the low-hanging fruit.

Pontiac is a treasure trove. In addition to the brand name itself, and the aforementioned Super Chief and Chieftain, the Sunbird, Firebird, Phoenix, and Star Chief all have Native American roots.

Another two-fer: The HSV Maloo Ute. Maloo is an aboriginal word for “thunder”. Ute is a Native America tribe*.

*OK…that last part is a stretch since Ute really is short of Utility, but in this context I can make it work.

As a brand, yes, but also don’t forget their model names included Brave, Warrior, Indian, and Chieftain.

Looks like it’s from The State, since there’s Michael Showalter, Kerri Kenney-Silver, and Kevin Allison. I don’t remember seeing this before, though.

dead_elvis is correct. It’s probably one of the most obscure things I’ve ever used the internet to find in 15 seconds. The audio is used on a CD called Bastard Music, by the band 12 Cent. I found that CD abandoned on a bar while waiting to see another band and have never been able to find out anything about the band; even their label’s domain name has expired and been taken over by something else, or maybe not.

I found that clip by searching fore the phrase, “Big Chief Running Deer Stewart”, and evidently it’s an un-aired sketch from a show I never watched. I had to read you toob comments just to figure that out.

Also from Ford (technically) the Escort Mexico, as Mexico is named after the Mexica people (also known, somewhat incorrectly, as the Aztecs)
