Welcome to Craigslist Crapshoot, our weekly search for the most bizarre, awesome, and/or terrible vehicles that the online classifieds has to offer.
Do you ever feel like nobody appreciates you or your contributions? Well, we sure do (appreciate you that is), and I appreciate all that you contributed to last week’s quest for under-appreciated cars and trucks. We’ll appreciate some of those in just a sec, but first, this week’s hide and seek.
Many of last week’s cars and trucks may eventually become recognized for the classics you know they already are. One marque that has always been recognized as such, even when it perhaps shouldn’t have been, is Chevy’s evergreen sports car, the Corvette. Let’s have some Vette love this week and see if we can’t find the cheapest/best value opportunity to get into the fiberglass Chevy club.
As always, we want your finds to go down in infamy and not in the site’s spam filter. Since we’ve changed commenting systems, you may need to update your commenter account. Make sure you have a Disqus account – they’re free and easy to get – and then comment away.
So you all deserve a hearty pat on the back for bringing the heat – and a bunch of cars, any one of which could be considered an underachiever. There was one however that was brought up by P161911 that I’ve been thinking about for a while now, and that’s Chevy’s Z24 Cavalier. The ad is unfortunately gone.
Now, before you rush to your pitchforks and torches, hear me out. I have a friend who once had a base Cavalier convertible – an old one at that – that he drove all through college and then on for years afterward.
The thing of it is, while that car didn’t handle particularly well, nor was it as tight as a drum after years and tons of miles, it still ran like a champ, never let him down and had a top that let the sun in when wanted and the rain out when needed. Add to that the better suspension of the Z24 and you’ve got a pretty compelling – and dirt cheap – ride. Yeah there are better cars out there, but the Cavalier – well, I like it.
Congrats to P161911, and thank you all for your carefully considered entries.
This looks like a deal that is almost too good to be true – a real, first year 1990 ZR-1 for less than $17k. Only flaws are a worn driver seat and power antenna issue. Granted miles are a little higher than most, just means the car has actually been driven. I’ve never had any desire, but this really looks tempting – I don’t see where you can go wrong here.

There’s no price listed but the best way to get into the fiberglass Chevy club is by making a Cameo appearance. The seller says the distinctive bed “is just being painted.”

If anybody can top this, I’ll be very impressed.
Also, the car is in Taber, hometown of Corb Lund, so that is enough of an excuse for me to post this:
Either you no somebody like this, or this is you.
If not… well, I think you’re on the wrong website.
This looks like a helluva deal to me:

1984 CHEVY CORVETTE $$ or Trade! * NO VEHICLES PLEASE * – $3150
PURCHASED in 1990, I have completely rebuilt this car and now it must go.
Been in storage too long and I can no longer drive it.
Chevy 350 Engine with Edelbrock Aluminum heads, cam etc estimated 465hp has less than 20,000 miles on it!
3500 Stall Converter with Bullet-proof “racing” 700R4 Trans and Dana 44 Differential with 3:73 Gears. Over $30k invested in these components alone!
Leather interior. Clear glass and solid fiberglass removable tops. 1991 + rear clip for the modern look!
Great project/Hot Rod car! Paint is faded and car does run but throttle bodies need to be rebuilt.
THIS CAR HAS BEEN SITTING IN STORAGE TOO LONG! COME AND GET IT!
$3,150 OBO! Will trade for BANG BANG Man Toys! Watcha Got?
Please leave message if no answer! I WILL get back to you!
Oh btw. . … Hey Scammers? I’ll take your Nigerian Bank check. . .. BUT. . … as soon as it clears and I give the FBI your info. . .. YOU GET THE CAR! OK? 🙂
Something tells me that if you brought “BANG BANG Man Toys!” you wouldn’t be the first armed individual that ever showed up at his home wishing to transact business. Also, 465 hp through a crossfire injection setup probably defies the laws of thermodynamics.
Cease Fire Injection? Not exactly awesome.
The cheapest I can find is a ’79 for $6,500. Seems not bad actually.

Apart from it being a ’79, that is. Corvette was approaching a horsepower nadir at that time. If you live in a place that doesn’t require ruthless originality for emissions purposes, you’ll still have a 350 short block to work with, and can extract decent power from it. Otherwise, you might have to resort to swapping in a much-newer powertrain and all of its electrics and emissions do-dads to add power and remain legal, which adds a lot of not-cheapness to an otherwise cheapish car.
Ah, but this is in Moose Jaw, where you could put plates on a squirrel if you convinced someone it passed an SGI safety, so originality is not required or endorsed in this case.
Cheap and value, all rolled into one!

DANG IT – 1978 Pace car – bonus Muncie 4 speed……………asking $5700 http://charlotte.craigslist.org/cto/5123837102.html Ok I’m done, beat this one…..
I haven’t seen a ’78 Pace Car for a four figure price in probably a decade… Hmm, no claims in the ad of it being a Pace Car, and stated to be a repaint. Pace Car clone? Still a good deal on a 4 speed C3.
Yep, this is not a pace car, it is a silver anniversary edition. Most were twotone silver/charcoal and a few were like this, in the pace car pattern colors. It needs some more attention but still I would hoon the carp out of this…
I wouldn’t trust it to be a silver anniversary edition, either. Every ’78 came with 25th anniversary badges. I was always under the impression that the silver anniversary cars were only in the two tone silver/charcoal, but I’m not confident enough to dispute your claim that there were some silver anniversary cars given the pace car’s two-tone.
I believe you, I know very little of Vettes. But smalleyxb122 the real question is, would you fork over $5k for it ??
Fortunately, it’s far enough away that I don’t have to make that decision. The decision would be much harder than it should be for what is, empirically, one of the worst Corvettes ever produced. Having been made, myself, in 1978, I’ve always had an affinity for them.
Wikipedia says they were all silver/charcoal? Are you sure? give me five minutes….. and check it again. lol.
shhh…Eckler’s can fix it right up – 1978 Pace Car Factory Decal Kit,
part #: 25-106824-1,
Price: $341.99 Kit
I had an ’81 Corvette project that I abandoned, so I’m a bit of an expert when it comes to the pain that these things can cause. Paint looks good, but there is something wrong with the rear suspension. One would hope that was a poorly installed rear spring that is easily remedied, but it makes you wonder what else was “fixed” and how.
I’d guess it is a mechanical basket case given “timing and carb problems”. It has no radiator shroud, and no nut on the carb air cleaner stud. Stuff like that just screams “half assed bubba project” to me. With a 4-speed, it would be worth looking at, but pull the interior trim to look at the birdcage and get under it and look at the frame; the Plastic Fantastic has a reputation for rusting out something wicked.

The flames are a little much, but the whole derelict thing just makes this look bad ass.
And, yes it does have some fiberglass (fenders, and hood).
