Classic Car Winter Hoonage in Eastern Europe

winter hoon cover

Summer time is definitely more car-guy-friendly for driving events, shows, rallies, and general get-togethers. Winter does not need to all cold and dark, however, as we will learn today. While ice racing is somewhat popular around the norther regions of our land, I have yet to see autocross on snow which, I think, is a brilliant idea!

As with the summer events, we will look at the images of awesome-ish and interesting cars doing what they are not really suppose to be doing. Like before, all images came from the awesome Polish site called Stado Baranow, which means which means a Heard of Sheep (direct translation) but it could mean a Group of Morons, too, which seems more fitting. And it would be fitting for Hooniverse too, if we ever sell this place and need to start something new.

Snap oversteer… is possible with a 24-ish horsepower engine.

imgp8128

weee….

imgp8115

Two stroke. If you put you face closer to your screen you can smell the exhaust.

img_4012

Not quite a rally car.

img_3998

Late-model box is to winter as a Husky is… to… uhmm… winter.

img_3995

In 1982 this was on my ‘cool list’

img_3981

The later years of 126p, probably around 1986-1989-ish. Not the updated bumpers and with rear fog-light and reverse lights, which became mandatory about that time. Also, people who had rear fog-lights didn’t always use them, like most Audi owners… mostly because it would put too much strain on the electrical system.

img_3950

Story time: I’m at my first ever New York Auto Show, some time around 1987. I hop behind the wheel of some Audi and I check out the interior. I thought that is was very sporty, well laid-out with focus on the driver, this most be a cool sports car.

I get out of and my mind is blown… it was an Avant! I made a mental note to myself to get one of those when I’m older.

img_3943

Great design. This is one of the few times, however, when its replacement was better looking.

img_3093

Rally car! Now we’re cooking with oil!

img_3029

Not sure of that rubber-band will hold those wheels.

img_3024

Any Italian car in snow and salt = ballsy.

img_2940

Yea! I’d love to hoon that!

img_2908

Can these things can even go around a curve without wagging their butts?

img_2899

Ahh, yes… when not oversteering, they’re understeering.

img_2886

Two-box design.

img_2862

Poetry in motion.

img_2842

Childhood dream car. Actually went to look at one when I was in my 20s. What a disappointment that was.

img_2836

Still… would hoon.

img_2803

Group B heritage.

img_2784

Everyone, everywhere, love the E30.

img_2776

Proper Lancia usage.

img_2743

For Sweden!

img_2536

One of the best vehicles in this whole post is probably also the least interesting.

img_2474

Lada 2105 (I think), once a family man’s dream, not a winter hoon mobile.

img_2465

The original CUV. Want. Would daily d.*

img_2458

Awesome looking Euro headlights.

img_1854

Pulling a sled with a car is an awesome idea… until the car stops.

img_1775

Euro Escort. Better looking than its North American cousin in my opinion, especially inside.

img_1759

Driver fail.

img_1743

How can you not smile when you see this?

img_1726

Polonez, mid-drift, Trabii, no drifting capability.

img_1590

German Ford Granada… it was decades ahead of its Euro cousin.

img_1583

Polonez, doing what its designers intended it to do… not falling apart.

img_1562

The last of the best Benzes?

img_1559

Personal luxury coupe… hooned!

img_1543

Zastava, a rare 3-door version. The funny thing is, the five door looked exactly the same, just with doors in place of the fixed rear window.

img_1523

Good old Scandinavian flick.

dscf5451

Not sure if AWD/turbo, or just looking like it. Great rally heritage. Also, I drove the U.S. version of the AWD/Turbo Celica… wasn’t impressed.

dscf5446

Late Sierra… another rally legend. I want one.

dscf5441

Everything is right about this.

dscf5440

Sadly, there are no action shots of this beauty.

dscf5438

I wanted this more than the E30 M3.

dscf5437

If it moves, it hoons.

17

Majestic.

15

Again, no action shots.

14

Beautiful design.

At night we ride through mansions of glory in suicide machines
Sprung from cages out on Highway 9

For Brad.

A Trabant, with "T R A B A N T" across the front? I thought they usually had just the Sachsenring "S" logo up front.

What an awesome looking autoX track. I especially like all the Polski Fiats being driven in anger.

There is a cosworth benz on the local classifeds. its amazingly clean and original with only 104k km on it. The ask is $5000, I dont think the dealer knows what he has, or Im way off in thinking it should be priced at about $9000.

I would have it inspected closely by an M-B mechanic (or someone else very familiar with the 190E 2.3-16). A friend of mine owned one for awhile, and he started having weird driveability issues. When he took it to be looked at, he learned the p.o. or someone else had disabled emission and engine control parts, jury rigged the underhood wiring, etc. He eventually found another sucker (in Calif.) to take it off his hands.

From the pics it looks very original and not molested in any way. The car is two hours away from my house and I cant buy somthing that old as my wife would kill me. She is slowly getting a sour taste from our current 98 Volvo S70 and its been about 98% reliable in the almost three years we have owned it, with the only trouble coming from the security/immobilizer system three days after buying it and again this past christmas eve while visiting family two hours from home. It needs the complete front suspension including the rack replaced because of the terrible (off) roads that pass for streets in this place.

Excellent captions! But a Volvo 300 on a cool list? Wow! Nice track, fun blend of cars. Won't racing/hooning on snow end up being a race on ice anyway?

I will one day own a 190e Cossie. ONE DAY. That is just poetry in motion.

Love that blue lanciabut man if he uses it in the salt and snow I hope he cleans it well before putting it away. I bet the tin worm is just aching to get at that thing.

The Lada is a 2105 indeed. Out of 3 that look like this the 2104 is a station wagon and 2107 has a different Mercedes-like grille.

I'm pretty sure that tan Trabant wagon is one of the late VW-engined four-stroke models because of the offset grille opening. Cool nonetheless!

Did Trabi's ever have a four stroke like late Wartburgs? The late Wartburg, with VW 4 stroke, also had a partial grill opening like that Trabi has.

        Yes, they did.

What more can be said!? One of my favorite posts of all time on Hoon! With thanks to Stado Baronow. That site always makes me wish I was there more than any other site I think. I drove a 126p from Lublin to Elblag (and back of course) in 1980 with 3 full size people on board. I remember the frustration, challenge and danger of passing other cars. No self respecting 125p driver wanted to be passed by a downhill momentum wound up 126p. But it went just fine and we all made it back!
