What is the one thing that everyone has pondered doing at one point in their life but never done? And don’t lie, you know you have all thought about it…
Build your own train of course!
Well, these guys did it.
What started out as an apparent conversation over beers in a pub (which is where all the great ideas of our time have originated) actually came to fruition in the form of an electric train car complete with seating for six and a dining/refreshment area (crate of beer).
The local Authoritah, however, did not appreciate the level of awesome exhibited by the Hoonatics and promply chased them down with a police helicopter since their police cars were incapable of following them down the tracks (having seen Groundhog Day several dozen times, I’m tossing the BS flag). Apparently their choice of testing on a “working” rail line was the one part of their plan that was not awesome.
Nevertheless, they get my vote for “Real Hoon of Genius.”

[Ed: welcome Jo Schmo to the team!]
Chugga chugga hoon hoon!

Welcome to the team, Mr. Schmo! Don't worry, the beatings aren't anywhere near as bad as Mr. Solex would have you believe. Besides, he was frozen in Carbonite, he shouldn't have been able to feel a thing. We think.
-
I thought the beatings were part of the incentive package?
-
who told you about my incentive "package"?
[It is fun not having an HR person here] -
Have you read Murilee novel? You'd enjoy it!
-
This is hoontastic to the nth power! Now that I think of it, I may have everything necessary to create such a contraption. Mine would be lawnmower engine powered. Or powered off my wife's Kitchenaid mixer motor. She won't mind, would she?

I have never seen Back To The Future 3 all the way through, so is this what they do to the DeLorean? How does it hit 88? Where is the flux capacitor? And why, for the love of god, didn't Doc Brown build this ORIGINALLY!?!? Genius my ass.
-
No one has ever seen Back To The Future 3 all the way through. Well, maybe in Guantanamo.
-
Actually I have several times. Thought it was better than the second one.
-
No, but I'm taking this project on today. I've just
piratedborrowed all three Back to the Future movies, and they're currently uploading to my AppleTV. Lethargy and pointless goals, we shall prove our worth today!

Good stuff, Mr. Schmo. Keep up the good work.
This is way cool, and yeah, it'd be fun. However, if anyone here ever passes through Ely Nevada, check out the Northern Nevada Railroad. It's a complete railroad that was donated to White Pine County by Kennecott when they sold the nearby copper pit. There are steam locomotives, diesel locomotives, all kinds of outrageous rolling stock (steam powered gigantic snowblower, anyone?). During the summer, you can take a train ride. I snuck onto their yard once, and hidden amongst the cabooses and boxcars and the like was a little rail going yellow enclosed service car powered by, I shit you not, a Ford flathead V8. I thought that was the niftyest thing I'd ever seen, and still do. These German dudes would approve of it, I'd like to think.-
That's going on the list of stuff to take a vacation to.

Just the ones from Murilee. She adds her own "special" flavour to them that make them a fair-bit more fun than the ones from Braff in a gimp mask.
-
If I recall, the "special flavor" was a thick goulash of petroleum extracts and shame.
-
And paprika!

I used to insure the NJ Museum of Transporation, which has it's own working rail line and restoration facilities. If you find yourselves near the Jersey Shore (Al Navarro), check them out. And if you bump into Bob Waldburger, tell him Mr. Scroggs says hello.

I used to go to Spring Lake all of the time and now I find out about this? Darn it all. I'll have to check it out next time I am in that area.
