Weekend Edition – May 1st Cruise: The Oldies

As is customary over here, on May 1st everybody embraces the coming summer. Everybody but the most miserable individuals have the day off work, some educated people wear funny white caps stained by past May Day celebrations, and the cool cars roll out the garages. Many towns have a separately organized cruise, where the enthusiast car owners do a loop around the town and let the townsfolk ogle at their prized possessions.

Just like last year, I took my camera and snapped away at the cars present. This time, I went to the parking lot where the cars had gathered before the cruise, and it was pretty much the most awesome sight all Spring. This first Weekend Edition post shows some of the older cars there. The distinction is vague, so bear with me.

This white ’59 Cadillac was perfectly original-looking down to the littlest details – and do I spot a tow hook under the rear plate?

A couple other Cadillacs in nice, matching pastel colours.

I’d like to know the name applied to this gunmetal brown of this Dodge Custom Royal. Is it a ’57?

This Chrysler New Yorker is a ’62 model. I like the bold styling on it, with just the smallest hints of fins left.

Bubba’s Bullet Gun Shop made an appearance last year, too.

When I ran the plates of this Deuce and an Alfa Romeo 75 came up, I thought there was a glitch. Nah.

The whole freaking thing is based on an Alfa Romeo Milano of all things. Mind = blown.

This ’47 Chrysler Windsor certainly appeared well-preserved and dignified.

Anybody want to identify this for me?

Finally, this Technicolour Cadillac finishes off the older section of the cruising sights.

  1. Yes the Dodge is a 57
That splotchy white 4-door looks like a picture
    I have of a 1947 Cadillac,except the park lights
    are not original.

  2. I was going to say a '42 Cadillac based on the silver painted chrome, but it looks like that might not be paint, it might be just tarnished.
It seems that the '42 & the '46-'47 are nearly identical.

    1. One of the very few differences (I think) was the front parking lamps. However, these have been replaced with little round directionals, eliminating that clue.

  3. Look at those fins on that beautiful '59 Cadillac! Oh….of course…..Finland.

    1. The Finland part of your comment is lost on me, sorry. HAh! Fins, Finland. Thank you! But it did remind me that while in elementary/primary school a class-mates dad had a light blue -59 caddy coupe, with blue and white sparkly interior. Another dudes dad had a gold 3rd gen Firebird, that dad was a pilot. Another dudes dad had some kind of boxy, burgundy Ford coupe and used to dig holes in the schoolyard gravel. Which was beyond cool. Our neighbor had a black Starcraft Astro(still has, 24 years later, looks like new, it replaced his first gen Barracuda). Another neighbors kid had a Fox Mustang, the 5.0 badge blew my mind. My Grampa only ever bought Peugeots, though.

        1. Well yes I was maybe eight, so anything big and loud was awesome compared to my parents Fiat 😉

      1. The name sounds like the way some southerners pronounce Coca-Cola: "Co-Cola".

  4. Did not realize so much"Detroit Iron" went to Europe.
Those old Cadillacs are so cool.

    1. Some were officially imported (GM's import location was for many years in Antwerp, Belgium), and some get there via eBay, auctions, etc., as well as US servicemembers and other folks.

  5. That Dodge is gorgeous, I like the ones that look like Imperials (but with way better tailfins best) but those antennas mean business on this one! I noticed in another shot the lights in the back and here that it does not look like the European style lights have been added. Is that a FInland thing? Is it cars that are registered a certain way, or of a certain age, it does not apply? Is that for all of Europe too if so?
