Welcome to Thursday Trivia where we offer up a historical automotive trivia question and you try and solve it before seeing the answer after the jump. It’s like a history test, with cars!
This week’s question: What is presently the world’s highest production motorized vehicle?
If you think you know the answer, motor on over the jump and see if you are correct.
Everybody likes to be the best at something. Manufacturers always tout when their product – whether it be a cell phone, dog biscuit, or vehicle – is the top seller in its category. In the automotive world, having the top-selling car or truck has for decades been a much sought after accolade, even though profitability is generally considered the better gauge of success.
We all know that Ford’s F-series trucks have been America’s top-seller for more than thirty years now. The top dog of cars hasn’t had quite as long a run, but Toyota’s Camry has held the crown for a number of years now. In Europe, Volkswagen’s Golf is a top-seller, while in Japan the best seller last year was the Toyota Aqua.
Those are of course year by year, and when it comes to the long haul the list becomes even more familiar. Ford sold 16-million Model Ts, while Volkswagen’s Type 1 managed over 21-million in sales over the course of its life. Toyota claims 40-million Corollas, but that’s not sales of a car, but of a nameplate. All of those however pale in comparison to the staggering numbers achieved by the world’s highest-selling motor vehicle.
From Honda Worldwide:
The Super Cub has been sold in more than 160 countries. Cumulative worldwide production of the Super Cub has reached 87 million units as of March 2014, which makes the Super Cub a motorcycle with the largest production volume in the world.
The crazy thing is, even at 87-million, that’s not the world’s highest production vehicle. That title goes to China’s Flying Pigeon bicycle, which, with over 500-million produced, is considered to be the single most popular mechanized vehicle on the planet.
