Rocket Rails

By Robert Emslie Jun 22, 2010

If this was what the trains were like, I'd ride the Metro-Rail a lot more often.

That’s an old photo of the Lakehurst NJ Navel base sled tracks, right around the corner from where the oh the huge manatee took place . This is one of five nearly 2-mile long tracks at the facility, and the 4 J57 jet engines on that sled are claimed to produce a combined 47,000 pounds of thrust- good for almost 290-mph. These tracks have been used to test crash dynamics and arresting equipment, but I’d just like to ride the sled back and forth a few hundred times.
Imagine once that sled goes under the gavel at a Navy surplus auction, buying it and fitting it out for freeway runs. You could blow the doors off a Veyron, and then claim that yours only has four turbos as well.

  1. My grandfather saw the Hindenburg blow up.
He was riding along on the tailgate of the family station wagon while they were driving across New York state that night, listening to the broadcast on the radio. Only found this out like last year.

  2. I'm pretty sure just one of those engines will blow the doors off a veyon…. along with the hood, fenders, wheels, etc.
This would be balanced with everything on your car being combined into one solid chunk

  3. Those engine are not J-57s. Those are centrifucal compressor engine like the Allison J33. I'll bet all 4 together have less than 24,000 pounds thrust.

    1. Came for the correction, leaving satisfied. 😉
They do use J57s at Glenn Research Center to heat up air for an engine test cell. I think my forced air system needs an upgrade.

  4. Does anyone have noise level data when these were running at full throttle? I need that data for a veteran friend that worked on J-57 engines on B-52 bombers, has tinnitus and hearing loss and the VA won’t help him.
