…but no wheels, yet. The tires have arrived for my 1967 Ford Mustang project car. I’ve opted to go with a set of T/A Radials, courtesy of my friends at BFGoodrich. While my initial plan was to run something a bit more aggressive, I think the T/A is a perfect starting point. It’s a tire that looks right on an older car and, more importantly, it’s available in a size that fits a 15-inch wheel.
Initially, I was considering a few 17-inch wheel options. My plan was to either go with something classically appropriate from American Racing or piss people off with a modern wheel from Fifteen52. However, I have decided to go in a different direction. It’s a direction I was also considering, but that decision was solidified after spending the day at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion during the most recent Car Week.
When you encounter some of the most bad-ass machines on the planet, you have to respect the drip—not oil drip, but perfectly styled wheels for perfectly awesome machines. I am talking about all of the Trans-Am era race cars and the gorgeous Minilites sitting at all four corners of most of them.
I am not sure how long they will take to arrive, but I’ve placed an order for a set of Minilites from the UK. Once they get here, the 225 front and 245 rear setup will get mounted on my Mustang. After that, it’s time to have the wiring finished. I have an engine on the way, more on that soon. But for now, here’s a small gallery of what I saw at Laguna Seca that helped me seal the deal in terms of the style direction for my own Mustang.
I love Minilites, and they look great on a lot of different cars. Nice choice.
That gallery makes me sad. I had the opportunity to buy the #77 for a 4-digit sum, but passed on it so that I could instead pay tuition.
Anyway, congratulations on making progress.
Holy…. shit. That’s wild.
Yes! Thank you for sticking with a 15″ wheel – I’m probably in the minority, but I really dislike anything bigger than 15 inches on any car or pickup truck from the early 60s through the disco era.
small wheels on old cars! it’s the only way. looks right and rides right. i put 18s on a W124 and they ruined the ride and handling.
unfortunately getting hard to find decent tires in sizes under 17″, but as long as they’re available, keep rocking the shopping cart look.
Is there any car that Minilites don’t look good on? Excellent choice.
And 15s, as the car gods and the Ford Motor Company intended. Well done.
