At first glance, this vintage picture seems to be of a somewhat nondescript Los Angeles parking lot, one of thousands that dotted the landscape back when the car was king and land was still relatively cheap. Actually, there are a lot of cool details in this image, from the Dodge Pioneer coupe in the foreground to the surprisingly contemporary looking simply say Delco billboard in the back.
Behind those are a couple of even more interesting L.A. icons. To the right sits one of the massive petroleum tanks that once were emblematic of Los Angeles’ booming oil extraction business. To the left of that there’s the Skelton Studios sign. Red Skelton was a beloved comedian and painter of creepy clown pictures. He successfully navigated Hollywood’s pitfalls for decades, featuring in film, and on both radio and television. In 1959 he bought the former Charlie Chaplin Studios located on La Brea just south of Sunset. A decade after that it became the headquarters of A&M records. Today it’s the home of the Jim Henson Studios, and the Skelton Studios sign has been replaced by a statue of Kermit the Frog, decked out as Chaplin’s Little Tramp.

I wonder if it’s one of the awesome “Marina” Safeway stores.

Wow, I didn’t realize the Marina Safeway (in San Francisco’s Marina district) was the daddy of a whole family of Safeway buildings.
I still think of Studebaker when I see their logo, though.

I think that tank is actually a Gasholder and not a petroleum tank. A petroleum tank is a fixed volume thing like a silo, and the liquid pressure at the bottom is determined by the amount of liquid above. A gasholder is like an inverted cup and the top floats up and down (hence the framework to guide it) as the volume of gas changes, but provides a constant pressure. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_manufactured_gas#The_Gasholder
You are absolutely correct, sir! :-).
My grandfather Cartier had a ’60 Dodge 2 door hardtop. Hopefully, one day so shall I.
Nothing to do with cars.
I heard this band a few days ago on the radio (WMBR, via a series of tubes) and now I’ve just boughten tickets to see them in a couple weeks. This’ll be the second time I’ve heard a band on Massachusetts based WMBR and ended up seeing them here in California within a month.
UFOMAMMUT; from their website…
UFO [,ju:ef’ou] abbreviation of U(nidentified) F(lying) O(bject)
MAMMUT [‘mæmmoot] italian for mammoth
The entire word “UFOMAMMUT” should be pronounced in the italian (sic) way and it sounds something like “oofomammoot”…
(I think the important part is spelling it in all caps)
We need to reboot the “What are you listening to right now” thread on the Hooniverse forum.
http://forum.hooniverse.info/viewtopic.php?f=6&p=4215#p4215
I was going to reference that thread. Then I looked at some of the stuff I posted and decided it was a silly place.
(I think you need to remember your I.D. login, which I still use over at Atomic Toasters.)
17th May is Norway’s national day, and a great occasion to take in folklore. Also, classic cars show up everywhere. I had the pleasure to first drive behind and then in front of a 1935 Rolls-Royce 20/25hp with Gurney Nutting styling – a Sports Saloon. RR managed to squeeze 50hp out of a 4 litre engine. VISIT:

Unfortunately, the general pest of driving with fog lights rather than with the light that is supposed to be on during the day doesn’t stop at übercool cars.
Sjalabais, you’ll be glad to know that in honor of Syttende Mai, we did have lefse and sandbakkels on Sunday night (but I put my foot down when it comes to rommegrot – I can’t stand that wallpaper paste!)
Nice! Is there a Norwegian community at the end of your gravel road? 🙂 I prefer rømmegrøt with sugar, cinnamon and ham to the various rotten fish dishes that are traditional autumn food.
My mother’s heritage is all Norwegian. My father’s is Swedish (and German). My mother-in-law’s is Norwegian.
Der’s lotsa a Scandahoovian blood up in deez parts, doncha know.
Personally, I really do not care for any Scandinavian food other than some of the desserts. But I am proud of my Viking heritage ( well, probably not Viking heritage, but I do like boats and ransacking opposing villages)
Neatly summed up heritage, ha!
Btw, how is your Saab doing? Did you get that window fixed?
It’s a whole new car! Window is fixed (with a stern warning that she is to never roll the windows down again lest another regulator breaks). Full 4 wheel alignment, and new fuel pump. With the new pump, the car is getting 35 mpg on the highway! She still thinks it will be replaced next year, but we’ll see…
Wow, not using the windows is going to be a challenge. Or did you cut the wire? Glad you’re happy; I’m afraid that we’re coming to a point were enthusiasts letting go of Saabs in effect decimate the population by 1.
Hey you might like this Sj. I drove a Swedish car from IL to PA and back this last weekend for the Carlisle Import and Kit Nationals. Here are some photos of Swedish cars: https://picasaweb.google.com/101140337460005353839/SwedishCarlisle2015?authuser=0&authkey=Gv1sRgCJDK4uO7yYzhGQ&feat=directlink
That’s a great variety! Did you take the Amazon?
I took the R, turn the volume-up 😉

Last year I took the Amazon to the Hershey swap meet, but this time I was meeting a fellow with a last gen GTO and I thought he would appreciate the S60R more. We end-up driving each others’ cars, that was fun.
I have more photos, but I divided them up into categories like this and I know that sometimes if people put in too many hyperlinks it marks it as spam and does not show the comment. So I don’t know how to share the rest of the photos easily with you, doh!
Saved this video for when I come home from work…and about the photos: I’ll find you on FB?
I remember having rømmegrøt as lunch on Fridays at NTNU. We used to share one bowl between three adult men because it was too rich for our wussy non-Scandinavian (one Spaniard, one Czech and one Australian) pallets.
There was a tank and all of those other items in that picture?? All I could see was the yellow & white Mopar that reembled my dad’s 60 Dodge Matador!! 🙂
