Hooniverse Wagon Wednesday – The 1993 Caprice "Majestic Nomad" Wagon

By Jim Brennan Feb 2, 2011

Wagon Wednesday was created here on Hooniverse to expose all of you to some exquisite wagons you may have forgotten about, or a certain project car hell wagon you may want to take home with you, or a historic wagon you never really knew about. Well, throw that all out the window, because I bring you this….

How do you ruin a perfectly acceptable 1993 Chevrolet Caprice Wagon? By creating a 1993 Chevrolet Caprice “Majestic Nomad” that takes visual cues from a 1957 Chevy Nomad, and tack it onto the 1993 wagon, and make sure you apply the tackiest paint job, close off the rear doors, and block-out the rear windows. This “Majestic Nomad” is one of only 18 custom kits designed by Tom Taylor, and leaves the running gear as stock as possible.

There is so much about this thing that I want to hate it, but I can’t. From the reworked front bumper (with quad foglights!), to the rear 57 fenders and tail lights, its just so tacky, and so badly done, that its good. The interior is also very colorful, with the red and white two-tone seats, and the “Nomad” script lettering along the walls, you just can’t help but smile. Even the nobs for the climate control and radio are re-worked in red/white plastic.

Is it Nauseating? Yes it is. Is it Thought Provoking? Yes it is. Is it something you would want to own? Well, I’m not sure I would own it, but what about you? Oh, and the asking price for this rolling Juke Box is $32,888! See the listing here.

  1. I hated it until i realized that the paint on the fins was 100% decal-icious! It looks like an even tackier version of a pink-painted '60s cadillac ghostbusters hearse.

  2. 1. Shave the hood. Those ornaments and pods simply do not work. It would have been better to put some rubber-tipped dagmars on the bumper.
    2. The tires and wheels look too small for the wheel wells.
    3. Something needs to be done about that huge expanse of red on the roof panel. Some sort of side window, perhaps. Hell, even a porthole.
However, even after all that I still wouldn't pay the asking price.

    1. Dear [deity], that Camaro is an abortion. The 'Vette and T-Bird are bad, but that first pic…bleargh.

  3. Thanks for posting this. I had a wonderful lunch but the taste was completely gone and now its back. Thanks.

  4. That has got to be the most garish automotive creation I have ever seen.
Too bad a Caprice Wagon had to not only die but lose it's dignity for this "creation".

      1. That's admittedly horrible, but considering how many Beetles are still out there, I'd feel less bad about losing one to this kind of abomination. I'd wager that far fewer Caprice wagons are to be had, and the ruination of one is worse than a dozen bastardized Beetles. And I love a/c VWs!

  5. The rear 3/4 shot isn't too bad. The sloping rear window and the fins actually almost work. But alas, there's the gun sights on the nose that are too close together, the abrupt end of the doors creating that vast expanse of red where the windows were (should have made it a real 2 door, not just a 4 door w/out rear doors), the wheels that are too small and painted or sticker trim instead of real chrome.
This thing makes me think that a Caprice-turned-Nomad could actually be done well, but this isn't that conversion. Where's Chip Foose when you need him?

  6. Show this to your kids and make sure to point out the "Majestic Nomad" lettering on the side. It's such a great opportunity for you to teach them about how sometimes, saying it doesn't make it so.
