The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 is here to fill a hole in the lineup. And it’s one hell of a plug. Gone is the GT350. You can’t afford a GT500. And the Bullitt is fine… but you want more and you’re sick of Highland Green (not really, but play along). The Mach 1 is here to deliver the goods.
Ford has taken everything its learned while giving us all the mighty Mustang variants over the years, and applied that to its development of the Mach 1. Thus we have the best-ever 5.0-liter the Blue Oval has deemed worthy to dish out. We’re talking a track-capable Mustang with 480 naturally aspirated horsepower and a ride that also works oh-so-well out on the street.
It’s been 17 years since the last Mach 1… and apparently, this new one has been worth the wait.
[Disclaimer: Ford invited us out to Willow Springs to test the new Mach 1 on the street and track, and gave us some lunch.]
Ford’s strategy for the storied ‘Mustang’ nameplate has me completely confused: Everyone has affection for the comfortable family-size hybrid CUV’s that have made the name Mustang famous worldwide.
Now they have produced …what? A racecar? And given it the same name???
It seems an odd choice.
