Weekend Edition – Tampere Sightings: Toyota Celica 1.8 GSi

In case you caught a glimpse of an electric blue Celica in the background of the previous Micra shots, you’re in for a treat. I did actually have time to take a couple photos of the Toyota, too.
And as it so often is with these ones in here, this Toyota Celica is the base model 1.8 GSi with 115hp. Total Suomi-spec, and this one has been in the country since new, originally sold by a capital region dealer.

In the mid-1990s, Toyota probably sold most of these because of the motorsport association. Even if the base non-turbo 1.8-litre engine isn’t anything to get excited about, it’s still perfectly reliable here. And the body’s still flared enough not to be dull.

The four-eyed Celica is barely better looking from the front than the facelift Hyundai Coupé/Tiburon, but somehow it’s still a little more coherent than the 1999 car, which looks like the front and the rear were from two different cars.

The resident Finn of Hooniverse. Owns old Peugeots and whatnot, writes long thinkpieces on unloved cars. These two facts might be related.

  1. Butterface. From the back, with those almost muscular wheel arches, it’s like – hey is that a Supra?
From the front, though. At least it’s unique. I don’t mind seeing them around.
