Welcome to the Independence Day Holiday Weekend here at the Hooniverse, and I thought I would just highlight some American Iron that I have found for sale around the web, because this is America, where the large land barges still roam free, and burn copious amounts of fuel on their way to the next celebration to show off their flanks. This Oldsmobile is a rather odd choice to start this weekend, but I thought it was unusual enough to bring to your attention… So, what do you think about it?
The 1976 Full Size Oldsmobiles were on their last year in this particular configuration. The very next year would see a seismic shift in the GM Full Sized Cars, shrinking over eight inches in wheelbase, and losing almost 1,000 pounds in their curb weight. Gone were the pillar-less hardtop versions of both the two-door and four-door sedans, as well as the weird and wonderful “Clam-Shell” Wagons, all in the interest of greater fuel economy.
This car is a throwback to the era of excess, with very big doors, seats that have little to no support, and questionable styling. I happen to love these things because I had the use of one for a couple of weeks in the mid 80’s while my car was in the body shop… Anyway, according to the listing:
1976 oldsmobile delta 88 royale 2 door hard top 350 v8 auto air, ps, pb. rear defrost “rare” radio delete, one owner rust free original, only 14.200 actual miles, this car runs and drives like new.
This car is a time warp, and it was also a relative stripper model. Yes, it has A/C, and a rear defrost, but no power seats, no electric windows, and no radio… who would order a car like that? If this was sitting at a dealer when it was new, the car would have at least had a radio, so it must have been a special order. Asking price for this almost new car is $8,950… See the Chicago Craigslist Listing here.
