The Real-Deal Superbird is Set to Blow Minds at Goodwood

One of my favorite cars on the planet has awoken from a well-earned slumber. It’s Richard Petty’s 1970 Plymouth Superbird. Why is it being stirred from its sleep? Because Richard’s son Kyle is putting the car on a plane bound for England. Kyle is prepping to run the Superbird up Lord March’s driveway to rattle some teeth, knock out some eardrums, and spill a shit load of tea.

The Petty Garage crew preps the car with some fresh fluids, a new battery, and… that seems to be all she needs. After getting the fuel flowing, the car bursts to life with its glorious and angry idle lope. Kyle soon appears to take the car on a test run to see if the brakes and steering are doing their jobs. You can see the immediate smile on his face in the video above as he leaves the property grounds and wheels on the surrounding public roads.

Could you imagine being one of the random cars driving the other way down the street? My head would explode, and I’d turn around and follow the Superbird to the ends of the Earth.

Oh, how I wish I were at Goodwood this year. Not just because it’s one of the greatest exhibitions of all things automotive but just to see the looks on the faces of those in attendance as they witness a true legend being hustled up that hill. The Festival of Speed actually kicks off today. So head over to their YouTube channel and see if you can see the car on the live stream at some point.
