Did you think we’d all be getting this excited about a new Corolla? The recently revealed 2023 GR Corolla looks to be a ripping good time of a vehicle. And that’s in large part to its mini might of an engine; the G16E-GTS. This is a turbocharged three-cylinder mill that makes 300 horsepower and 273 lb-ft of torque. That is 100 horsepower per cylinder and that is awesome.
To keep the engine breathing efficiently, and reduce backpressure, the engine uses a triple exhaust exit setup in the rear. It looks wild and is quite functional at the same time. Inside the engine, there’s plenty of cooling oil flowing to the pistons, the intake side of things is machined, and the whole lump rocks and rolls on up through its peak powerband hitting between 3,000 and 5,000 rpm. Toyota has integrated the turbo right into the exhaust manifold itself, which reduces overall weight and keeps things nice and compact in the nose.
I know Toyota doesn’t crank out crate engines. But this little monster would do wonders under the hood of many a machine. Heck, this engine would be awesome in more things right in Toyota’s own lineup too. I’d love to see one plonked into a Tacoma, complete with the GR-Four drive setup and the rev-matching six-speed stick.
