Called “Porsche with Meteorite” this 2013 modern art installation by Chris Burden proved one thing and one thing alone, and that is that I do not understand modern art.
Last Call indicates the end of Hooniverse’s broadcast day. It’s meant to be an open forum for anyone and anything. Thread jacking is not only accepted, it’s encouraged.

This would be Chris Burden that was nailed to a VW Beetle, and later built the 1,000 tiny zooming car sculpture called Metropolis 2.

The second is great, love it. The first? Eh, I guess I just don’t understand “art”. I do appreciate any form of tweaking the establishment, religious institutions in particular, and I’m sure many people took offense at that crucifixion-inspired bit, but I sure as hell don’t get what he was going for.
I’ve owned two Bugs; I believe I understand his sentiment perfectly.
I’ll take working in the engine bay of a Type I over that of a Type III any day, thankyouverymuch.
Burden was an odd cat. Once let a friend shoot him in the shoulder as performance art.
And if that was all I knew of him, he’d be one of those artists I just sort of pass over. But the Porsche and Metropolis are frickin’ amazing.
My favorite, though–The Big Wheel. Simple concept: use a Benelli motorcycle to get the 2.5 ton wheel moving at 70 mph, then turn off the bike. The wheel keeps turning for hours.
Object lesson in inertia?
While I like that there’s nothing preventing the spectators from sticking out a hand & potentially losing a digit (or an entire limb), I’m far more interested in the Benelli than in the Big Wheel itself.
I’ve gotten to see the Metropolis 2, and it is impressive and fun! And, definitely a piece of modern art that I enjoyed watching. Likely though, I enjoyed all the Hot Wheels and electric trains and Erector Set looking bits, but failed to recognize some of the deeper hidden meaning in the art. I like that Chris Burden uses automobiles in his art, I think automobiles often express an artistry in design and engineering that is sometimes appreciated and sometimes hated, just like other kinds of art. His works using cars to let me feel cultured and interested at a museum even though I may not get some of the other stuff–total bonus!

“Porsche with Meteorite”
No, no, until it touches the ground it’s called a VW-Porsche.
I was taght that modern art was there not to be understood, but to make us ask questions.
The first question springing to mind is…
Why?
And the second: “Well, why not?”
“Where shall we have lunch?”
In the Restaurant At The End Of The HOONIVERSE!
I currently own Miata With Roof Leak. It’s a counterpoint to my Apartment With Many Roof Leaks. I did not need 17 inches of rain this week…
I hope the rain didn’t make too much art of your stuff? If it’s any consolation, we got 2000+mm of precipitation the first six months of the year (that’s four average years of where I come from), and we’re still waiting for summery weather.
Rain took out my kitchen ceiling, 2 cable boxes, one flat screen tv, and a computer. And some treasured artwork. Feces, indeed, manifests itself…
Damn. I hope you’re well-insured!
i have that same Miata piece!
in a determined effort to spend as close to zero dollars as possible on the car, i patched it up with swatches of vinyl, RTV silicone, Amazing Goop, and, around the A-pillar door seal, some silicone grease. seems to do a decent job keeping water out, except that it hasn’t rained here in weeks and, if the forecast is correct, it won’t rain for weeks more.
when it is raining, the silicone grease needs reapplication every few weeks. nbd.
i need to move where you are…
Waco, TX?
we make up for it with black widows, rattlesnakes, apocalyptic cults, and motorcycle gang gunfights. also it’s a hundred degrees out every single day and the now bone-dry dirt roads at my place of work are slowly polishing my alveoli to a mirror finish. almost makes me nostalgic for road salt.
This is why, living in the rain soaked island that is Ireland, I own “Eunos with Hard Top and Iron Oxide”
Dude here at work owned a piece called Mitsubishi With Roof Leak. The artist he got it from didn’t tell him it was a transformative piece. After a *really* big thunderstorm, it immediately became Mitsubishi With Randomly Screaming Stereo and after two days turned itself into Carport With Fire.
This installation, underlined by the choice of color, conveys really well, pinpointing the connotation. In the context of Armstrong and considering the spatial interpretation, I’d estimate this to be about 175000 (factor 20 if the meteorite is a genuine one).
(I’m not very good with this, but i was too lazy to look an art critique generator)
