Hooniverse Asks: What’s the best factory-supported upgrade for the money?

Through its Performance Parts division, Ford will sell you a kit to boost the power output on your Ranger. It’s called the EcoBoost Power Pack Performance Calibration and it’s $825. While that’s not cheap, it is a pretty sweet deal for what you get. Here’s the official rundown of what’s included:

Ford Performance calibration for 2019-2020 Ranger EcoBoost. The Ford Performance engineered performance calibration is a 50 state legal calibration for your 2019-2020 Ford Ranger that increases power and improves drive-ability throughout the rpm range.

  • 50 state legal – C.A.R.B. EO#: D-752-12

  • Ford Performance engineered and dyno tested

  • Improved drive-ability and throttle response throughout RPM range

  • Optimized shift schedule

  • Horsepower gain: 45 HP @ 4,500 RPM

  • Torque gain: 60 lb/ft @ 2,500 RPM

  • For U.S. and Canadian vehicles

  • Comes with Ford Performance 3yr/36k mile warranty from new vehicle in-service when installed by a Ford dealer or ASE/Red Seal certified technician

  • Tire size configurable up to 265/70/17 as recommended with the M-18000-R Ranger Off-Road Suspension Leveling Kit

  • Premium fuel – 91 octane or higher – is required

  • Includes Ford Performance Pro Cal 4 calibration delivery tool M-12655-F

  • Includes Ford Performance high-flow K&N® air filter

That’s an extremely healthy gain in usable engine power. And to have the gearbox optimized to make the best use of it is great too. These aren’t eBay speed parts either, as this is all warrantied and comes directly from Ford. Although, if you shop around a bit you can even find the full package on sale from other great retailers like, say, Mountune (on sale for $699 at time of publication).

If I owned a current-gen Ranger, there’s no doubt my truck would be running this upgrade. But I’m also curious about some of the other great bang-for-the-buck factory available upgrades out there. Share your favorites below.

  1. The Dodge Demon $1 “Demon Crate” which featured: two narrow front wheels, a performance ECU with high-octane fuel calibration, a replacement instrument panel, a personalised ID badge, a performance air filter, two valve stems, passenger mirror block off plates, hydraulic floor jack, cordless impact wrench with charger, a torque wrench, tyre pressure gauge and a tool bag. (hooray for copy and paste)

If that wasn’t enough, the passenger seat was a $1 option as well, which surely must have had a 100% take rate!

    1. Yeah, but that’s a bullshit marketing trick, considering the car costs $85k. You’ve basically already paid for the “Demon Crate” even if you opt for it or not.

  2. In terms of value, the Porsche 968 Clubsport spec – it was actually a few thousand cheaper than a regular fat boy 968. Back in the days before Porsche figured out they could charge more for the stripped out model.
