Hooniverse Asks: Seen any good HCOTY candidates this year?

By Jeff Glucker Nov 30, 2020

This has been an… interesting year, to say the least. However, I do feel like we’re not overwhelmed with Hooniverse Car of the Year candidates in 2020. I have a few in mind. I know my team of editors is thinking of the vehicles to be nominated as well. But I’m curious if you have some thoughts on what would make for a great candidate in this weird-ass year we’ve had?

One car near the top of my own list is Ryan Tuerck’s Formula Supra. It may be cheating a bit, as it’s not even done yet, but the idea of the project is rather exciting for me. Putting a Judd V10 into anything makes a car worthy of being on this list. To do so with a new Supra is an inspired choice.

Perhaps this will be the first time a new car makes the cut? Is the new Bronco worthy of being on this list? Some might say yes, while others will certainly rail against the idea. And that’s why we let you all vote… at the end of the day, you determine the winner. But we still have to find some worthy choices for you.

  1. I got nothin’. It feels like I’d have to dip back into 2019 to find anything I would consider HCOTY-worthy.

  2. the Hooniversal Car of the Year 2020 is a Domino’s Pizza car, with the built-in warming oven, being shot out of a cannon into a brick wall.

    1. My grandfather had an International Aaco just slightly newer, the same mechanical setup, also a later diesel with a tipping tray.

I have a real soft spot for the old truck even though I only ever drove the other, and years ago I knew where it had gone. I’ll have to ask the family still in the area if it is still around. I hate to think how rusty the cab would be though.

      1. 1957 – 59 Plymouth Savoy, but I only know that from the pictures I took of the headlight/grill and the door handle, and the way that stripe is painted.

Never heard of a Plymouth Savoy before in my life. Evidently the less charismatic sibling of the “Christine” era Fury.

  3. It’s a struggle to remember with Covid-brain, but here are a few nominations

    Icon Derelict 49 Hudson

The Hot Wheels Legends winner Pontiac Transam

This V8 Mini rat rod is a bit cartoon

The Jensen Interceptor FF restomod is pretty nice, and I also saw a really nice Lotus Sunbeam on Speedhunters

Edit: how about AdamLZ’s Barra powered GT350 Mustang? Can’t understand why he didn’t just run the ZF trans, but he certainly made it sound good.

    1. Best early Charger shell he could find, from a 30-year old (uncompleted?) build, now ditching the unnecessary bits.
