Wagon Wednesday: Jaguar XF Sportbrake

Wagon Wednesday rarely features a car that’s hot off the press, but for this one I think we can make an exception. Revealed just today from Jaguar HQ and before its expected launch at the Geneva Motor Show is the Jaguar XF Sportbrake, one of the best looking wagons in recent memory.

Built off the same chassis as the XF saloon, the XF Sportbrake has the heart of either a 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine or a 3.0-liter 6-cylinder – both diesel – and drives the rear wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. In the “wagonification” process, the XF gained an additional 5mm in length and about 70kg (154 lbs) of weight. Inside, rear-seat passengers are treated to an extra 1.9 inches of headroom and people who use their cars to actually carry things will be pleased to know it has roughly 19 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats in place or 59 cubic feet with the rear seats folded down mostly flat.

But what if you need to transport something that can’t fit behind the self-closing boot lid? Luckily for you, Jaguar claims that thanks to self-leveling air suspension and a tow hook that you probably have to pay extra for, the XF Sportbrake can be used for light towing.

Now for the bad news: Jaguar will not confirm nor deny that the XF Sportbrake will only be available in Europe, but chances are good that we will never see it come stateside. Our UK readers, however, will be pleased to know that deliveries will take place in the third quarter of 2012. Pricing and more specific availability info will be available closer to its launch.

Nerdy specifications and depressing availability info aside, cars this beautiful and awesome are exactly why Hooniverse has a thing called Wagon Wednesday. An extensive photo gallery is below for your viewing pleasure.
