Truck Thursday: Ford Maverick – Tremor vs. Lobo

By Kamil Kaluski Apr 10, 2025

For 2025, the Ford Maverick received some minor updates and two new models. Those two new models are the off-road-y Tremor and the street-truck-y Lobo:

  • The Tremor, like its much bigger cousin, comes with a lift kit, slightly bigger knobby tires, tow hooks, and off-road-y trim.
  • The Lobo is lowered, has bigger moon-disc-like wheels, a fast-shifting dual-clutch transmission, and a cool monotone trim to go along with it.

Both trucks have the same two-liter 250-horsepower and 280 lb.-ft. engines and both are AWD. The biggest difference are the transmissions: 7-speed DCT on the Lobo and a conventional 8-speed automatic on the Tremor. Then of course there is suspension and the rest of the chassis. Both are build for enthusiasts but for completely different purposes.

The interesting thing is, when similarly equipped, their prices are almost identical. The Lobo starts at $35,255 and the Tremor starts at $40,350. But in order for these two to be comparable, the Lobo must be ordered with the Maverick Lobo 702A package, which includes most of the stuff that is standard on the Tremor. For them to be as close as possible, the Tremor must be ordered with a $995 moonroof.

At that point, the prices, with designation, are $43,040 for the Lobo and $43,635 for the Tremor. And here is my problem – I like them both! I honestly don’t know which I’d rather have. I love the rugged looks and chunky tires of the Tremor, but I have also been driving lifted 4x4s on chunky tires for quite a few years now. The Lobo has me with sport sedan-like handling but the tires would be more prone to blow-outs on the crap roads around where I live and would be less comfortable, but damn it, I miss owning a sporty vehicle.

I honestly don’t know which I would pick. But I am glad that both are available. Check them out on Ford’s website.

  1. the base price of the maverick is 26k, which is already way up from the original msrp of 20k. to be fair i was blown away that they were introducing it that cheap, but that was a huge part of the appeal to me. i loved it, and i still think 26 ain’t bad for what you’re getting. at 40+ i’m having a hard time seeing it, though.

      1. even worse! it’s 15k of options on a $25k truck. some of the upgrades do seem substantial – new steering rack on the lobo seems legit, sounds like controls arms/shocks/springs on the tremor, etc. but hard to picture either being worth 15k, even including all the fancy options. for me, i’d rather spend my money on strong fundamentals.

i recognize that this may be an unusual preference. a few years ago a non-car-guy friend had the intention of buying a base-base Wrangler for 35k, and ended up buying a fully loaded Renegade for the same price instead, because it was what the dealer had. when i saw it i smiled for him, but i was dying inside.

  2. Lobo is great. I hope the tuners can eek some good power out of it. But approaching $45k is a lot to palate.
