This Papercraft Überbird Soars into My Heart

Insert Slot Awesome into Tab Bad-ass

Reader SmokyBurnout has recently taken up the wonderful art of papercraft. He stumbled across a template for a 1984 BMW 635CSi. Not content with the basic German goodness contained in the kit, he decided to produce his own version. The result has my jaw on the floor. Hop the jump for photos of what this template can turn into when an X-acto wielding Van Gogh gets a hold of it.

He nailed it! Look closely at the detail on the image above. Every time I stare at it I find another subtle nuance in the template. From the way he captured the noise to the details on the decals, the level of awesome here is off the charts.
He even got the license plate!

Here are two copies of the template and a few more shots of this papercraft creation:

  1. Oh, this TOTALLY made my week!
Printer! Print me out a few of these for my friends and I! What do you mean, "paper jam?" "Slot Load Error??" Dammit Printer! Print!!

  2. Years ago I worked with this guy, we'll call him Milton, who was big time into papercraft. He had paper models of pretty much every Star Wars vehicle on his desk. Milton was also…how should I say it..socially challenged. He was a really nice guy, and very smart, but he was damn annoying. He didn't have many friends, in part because his personal hygiene was nonexistent. We were lucky if he showered once a week. I felt bad for Milton, and tried to be friendly to him. Of course, this meant I was the one he came looking for when he wanted to chat. I never turned him down, because I was also convinced that if anyone at work was going to go University of Alabama on us it would be him. I wanted him to get to me and say, "You were nice. You may live."
Other than the papercraft connection, I'm sure our friend Glucker and Milton have nothing in common.

      1. I'm a nerd. I admit it. However, even I thought papercraft was a little too nerdly. I may have to submit to the ubernerdliness of papercraft for that. Me likey!

  3. Hey, is that a subliminal ad for Toyota and Nissan? Are they paying you guys???
Anyhow, that is f'in cool, (will it be available on Hoonimerch?) and I can't wait to see Engineerd's reaction to skaycog's posted pic.

    1. Still just Google Ads at the moment.
Not a bad idea re: the hoonimerch connection. Maybe we could get SmokyBurnout to make some and he could sell them via that page…

      1. A Hooniverse papercraft collection would kick unfathomably large quantities of ass. It could include HCOTY nominees, editors' and commenters' rides (e.g. mad_science's Falcon, the damnelantra™, my Fünfzylinderdieselpanzerwagen, etc.), and other generally awesome vehicles.

    2. If you look closely, the ads have been slashed up by a boxcutter, so maybe I'm telling you not to shop at Middletown Nissan (though, I've never bought a car from them and I'm sure they're nice people.
If I were to sell models through Hoonimerch, they'd have to be higher-quality than this one (printed on glossy photo paper) and entirely of my own design.
Also, most of those other models I've built, as well as the regular BMW 633CSi, can be downloaded at racepaper.de and streetpaper.de .

      1. I'm going to have to ask, and perhaps feel stupid in the process…… Do you make any of these on special request? I really have no idea what all is required in order to make one, but I would be more then willing to discuss compensation!! (you can probably guess what vehicle I'm thinking of, so yeah, I would be the only one to purchase one, so figure that into the price)

  4. This is really cool! I have to get a set of these printed for my students to build.
Does this mean we actually have some fans?

  5. HOLY CRAP! PLEASE OH PLEASE OH PLEASE OH PLEASE CAN I HAVE A COPY OF THE PORCUBIMMER FILE? In two weeks, we are attending Lemons Sears Pointless and we are having a Lemons Pinewood Derby Saturday night and I am building a replica of our beloved Porky to enter in the race. I haven't started the woodworking yet but holy crap, this would make my life SO much easier as I could shape the wood to fit the form of the template, then print out the car and glue the paper to the wood. Frig it would be so epic. I promise to give you proper credit of course. Mr. SmokyBurnout sir, may I *PLEASE* have a copy of the file?
