If you’ve ever considered selling everything and living on (or off) the road and maybe invade a small country along the way, doing it in something like this behemoth is perhaps the best way to go. Today’s Craigslist special is a retired Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT) converted into the ultimate expedition vehicle.
That’s right, a heavy truck designed for US military service in a variety of roles, including tanker duties (like this one was) and sometimes anti-ballastic missile deployment, has been turned into an expedition vehicle, is road-legal with RV registration, and is for sale on your friendly neighborhood Craigslist at a reduced price. Not sure I can conjure up much enthusiasm for this. Have you ever ridden in a HEMTT? It’s not an activity I would pay the purchase price, the fuel bill, and the maintenance costs to endure enjoy.

I’d imagine it’s something like riding the Baja 1000 on something with the wheelbase of an SRX600 without realizing you’re not supposed to sit on the saddle.

On the other hand, if this was an LVS, or any articulated vehicle with hydraulic yaw steering, do whatever you can to get behind the wheel.

Despite how cool it appears, the situations for which this is an excellent solution are limited.

I’ve not but I think I still want to. A friend drives some kind of heavy equipment in the army and said these were excellent off-road but said nothing about what it’s like on pavement. He also said 2 mpg with a load like that, tops…

That’s similar to what my local Volunteer Fire Departments mid sixties Fargo did, that one got about 1km / litre when in a hurry.. It was replaced by a Unimog in 1991.
And I’d imagine a Unimog or MAN TGA or similar would be a better expedition vehicle than this thing.

It’s pretty bad ass. It combines a post-apocalyptic exterior aesthetic with a beautifully appointed interior. The $100k price is out of my reach, and it wouldn’t be my choice if I had the $100k to spend, but it doesn’t seem like an outrageous price for what I’m seeing here.

This is similar to my dream camper project, though in my head, I’d start with a Tatra 813 8 wheeler

Did you just create a situation where we all look at the Tatra 813 8 wheeler and consider it a more reasonable choice for this purpose?

I dunno dude, I just watched way too much truck trials on Eurosport back in the day. It’s like the slowest mosty hypnotic motorsport ever.

I think this is the reasonable solution http://robgray.com/graynomad/wothahellizat/wot2/index.php or substitute a Deuce & a half for the US.

From memory that tops out at 40-45 mph though. It is based on a 1960s International Acco military truck. Just stay away from highways I suppose, not hard to do in the middle of nowhere.
The HEMTT would be far too big to take to a lot of places, which is why the wotthehellizat (above) was actually shortened and the top lowered from its initial incarnation.
