The News for September 19th, 2014

hoo Welcome to the Hooniverse News! As always, this is a weekly recap of some of the biggest stories in the automotive industry without the fluff or bull. I just throw in a little opinion of mine because I can. This week:

  • Aston Martin Vanquish Carbon editions love carbon

  • Volvo XC90 R-Design loves sportiness

  • Bentley Mulsanne Speed loves torque

  • Lamborghini loves teasing a new car – will probably be an SUV we all hate

Aston Martin Vanquish Carbon Editions

Vanquish_Carbon_03 Aston Martin is preparing two new special edition models of its freshly updated  2015 Vanquish. Even though they’re technically new, it’s something you’re probably familiar with by now. The Vanquish Carbon editions (Carbon Black and Carbon White) get a familiar touch of sinister to go with the Vanquish’s gorgeous looks. Here’s what we know so far… The Vanquish Carbon Black edition is an all-black Super GT which is meant to give the car a strong and commanding road presence. Carbon elements, such as the roof, mirrors, side strakes, and even the Aston Martin “wings” badge itself (as an option) fit in with this dark theme well. Additionally, black window surrounds and ten-spoke gloss black alloy wheels make nearly every surface of this car black. Meanwhile on the Vanquish Carbon White edition, all of that carbon fiber and those other black styling elements serve to provide a dynamic contrast to the car’s Stratus White paint. Vanquish_Carbon_05 Inside, each car comes with a unique combination of materials and stitching which also fits with the dark carbon theme on the exterior. Both cars come with special machined carbon fiber sill plaques, a herringbone carbon fiber fascia, black anodised center stack rotaries (fancy dials), Obsidian Black leather with contrast stitching, and black gearshift paddles with accent colored leather tips (because Aston Martin). Even though both cars are set to make their global debut at the Paris motor show, each is available to order now as either a Coupe or Volante. Pricing isn’t available. [Source: Aston Martin]

Volvo XC90 R-Design

The all-new Volvo XC90 R-Design That didn’t take long. Just a few weeks ago we were celebrating the all-new Volvo XC90’s release and this week we’re already on its second variant (the First Edition being the… uh, first – which sold out in 47 hours). This one is a bit more than just special paint and badging though. It’s special paint, badging, AND a sporty appearance. Welcome to the Volvo XC90 R-Design. If anything it gives me an excuse to post photos of the new XC90 again. The all-new Volvo XC90 R-Design Made for people who want all the wonderful things a new XC90 has to offer but also want it to turn heads and radiate with sportiness, the XC90 R-Design takes everything that’s good with the regular XC90 and adds unique exterior treatments, interior features, and sportier wheels. On the exterior, you get a new grille, front splitter, silk metal window trim, integrated dual tailpipes,  bright roof rails, matte silver door mirrors, and either twenty-inch or twenty-two-inch R-Design wheels you can’t get anywhere else. Inside, occupants are seated in new bucket seats and the driver gets a perforated steering wheel, R-Design gearshift knob and pedals, and other small touches like branded floor mats. The 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment center also features a new R-Design theme. The all-new Volvo XC90 R-Design will be a permanent trim level and will go on sale… uh, soon. [Source: Volvo]

Bentley Mulsanne Speed

mulsanne1 This week Bentley revealed a new model which they call their new pinnacle flagship which “redefines the fastest ultra-luxury driving experience in the world”. A four-door, ultra luxurious Mulsanne can do that? Well when you tack on the Speed name behind it, yes. But that’s not the only thing they added… To earn the Speed name, this Mulsanne features a reworked 6.75-liter twin-turbocharged V8 which produces 530 horsepower and 811 lb.-ft. of torque available from 1,750 RPM. That means the 0-60 sprint takes 4.8 seconds and the top speed is rated at 190 mph. All that in a car with tray tables and a champagne bottle cooler in the back seat. Power goes through an optimized eight-speed automatic and ends up only at the rear wheels. The air suspension is unchanged with the exception of a new sport mode which stiffens it up when activated, but can still offer the usual extreme levels of comfort in other modes. mulsanne2 The only other new items added to the Mulsanne Speed are the handful of interior and exterior tweaks, such as the dark tinted mesh grille, dark-tinted headlights and taillights, 21-inch “directional wheels”, twin-rifled exhaust, four new paint colors, and some special interior treatment with materials and stitching that normally comes with the Mulliner Driving Specification package already available. So there you go. If you want extreme luxury and extreme speed in one package (or a really expensive drifting machine), the Bentley Mulsanne Speed is the car for you. [Source: Bentley]

New Lamborghini for the Paris Motor Show

lamborghiniteaser Something wicked this way comes. Lamborghini has sent out this teaser for a new model they’re bringing to the Paris Motor Show next month. The image you see here contains the only information we currently have about… whatever this is. We’d like to think that it’s a brand-new model and not just a reworked Aventador or Huracán (or an SUV), but at this point any guess is as good as mine. Going by the “double it” tagline, I’m guessing/hoping that it’s a four-door or at least a 2+2. Espada revival, anyone? That silhouette also kind of reminds me of the Miura, meaning we get a second V12 Lamborghini on the market at the same time. Or it’s probably some SUV that everyone feels obligated to build these days. Whatever it is, I’ll tell you what you need to know about it when it breaks cover. Unless it’s an SUV.
