Putting the 2016 Nissan Titan XD to work

I’d driven the truck when it first launched. The 2016 Nissan Titan XD was just fine and dandy on the smooth roads around Scottsdale, Arizona. It handled itself surprisingly well on the short off-road portion of the driving event, and brushed off the shorter towing portion with ease.
I wanted to find out a bit more about this new in-betweener truck. It’s packing a dash more heat than half-ton shoppers typically get yet doesn’t go full bore three-quarter ton. What’s it like to live with the truck and put it to work? So I did that… and used it to tow something for a long distance.
Oh I slept in it too, but that part wasn’t fun.
[Disclaimer: Nissan lent me a Titan XD at home for a week, and then again a few weeks later left one parked at SFO for me to borrow for our LeMons party. I said LEMONS party… with an S. Wait, that still doesn’t sound right.]

I can appreciate how Nissan is trying something different, considering how little traction the first-gen Titan got. Still, I can’t understand why they upgraded it to look like bits and pieces of every other half-ton on the road right now.
Also, did they get rid of the under-bed tool box? That’s one feature I would really miss.

It’s like they grabbed two of everything from the bling aisle at AutoZone.

Or spent all their money on the deal with Cummins and panicked at the last minute, going into a “make it look like a truck!” frenzy and got “meh” as the result

Seems like a decent option if it fits your niche. Sad piano music made me think the whole thing was some manner of tragedy though.

    Following up on that…
The power on this thing is weird. It’s not the same “hard” torque that a Cummins 6BT, Powerstroke or Duramax has…but it’s not like a modern rev-happy V8. Then it dawned on me: felt just like an old-school big-block. Tons of grunt down low, but still some mid-range rev-ability.
But, you know, with like double or triple the fuel economy.
