Podcast: Episode 252 – Exploring the new space

We’re in Chris’ new apartment and we’re not in full studio mode yet, but we still want to run things a bit old school while exploring the new. So for Ep252 we bring it back to the original format; The News!

We kick things off by talking about the Aston Martin Rapide AMR, Forza Horizon 4, the Shelby GT350, and Rolls-Royce’s Cars and Cognac event. After that it’s time to talk about our own cars and what we’re driving. This week I’m in an Audi R8 Spyder before I swap into a Lexus LC500. The following week I get a chance to sample the new F-150 diesel and I’ll be towing a small Airstream behind.

Finally, we move on to your questions. Patreon first, as always, then Twitter and Facebook. This old format feels right, so we’re going to run it this way for awhile and get back into our groove.

Looking forward to what you think of the F150 Diesel, especially in comparison to the standard Ecoboost.

For all the reports of the death of diesel, I think it’s going to get a second wind in the US of all places when CAFE standards affect trucks, and at least they make sense in those vehicles, as opposed to a Jetta.

The rise of turbo, direct-injected are the diesel’s biggest threat IMO, cutting their ‘traditional’ torque advantage (for TD’s vs n/a gas) and fuel economy. Mind you in Europe gas engines are getting particulate filters fitted now, so perhaps the scales will start tipping back again.

TD’s can be great in cars, we had a Focus hire car in the UK that gave about 50 mpUSg while doing a lap of the place, but everything depends on everything – they can also lack power compared to the gas options too. Depends if you want outright speed or torque.

Not to mention HCCI type engines like Skyactiv-X …but in a truck, you just want torque.
