See, even Lotus can’t make the Segway look cool.

  1. Way off topic, but I figure I'll blurt this out: What is the psyche of a suburb-living, around-40-and-has-a-steady-job dad? About what I can gather is that 70% of the time they want to do things, y'know, for the kids, but yet the other 30% wants to reinstate his primal man-status; I'm not out of touch yet, people! One thing that is consistent, though, is that they want to get things right. They don't seem to be wishy-washy at all; they know what they need to do and they will get it done. The right way, too.
Is this an accurate generalization of this group? Full disclosure: I'm doing a project studying the adaptability of small, less-polluting single-seat runabouts in a suburb environment. Your input means I don't have to do work helps me gain a fuller insight into the target group of users. And no, I don't plan on selling anything; please don't Burberry!…

    1. As 39 year old American I can tell you "I'm bitter and I want a small fast car, and maybe a fast woman, and definitely a bottle of scotch". I think "Red Barchetta" sums up life for most guys my age.

      1. When looking at the pollutants of the most concern (NOx, CO, hydrocarbons) bikes actually emit far more than cars. Here's an LA Times article on the subject. Fortunately CARB and the EPA seem to realize that there aren't many technologies that are appropriate for reducing bike emissions, and that bikes are such a small part of the picture in terms of vehicle-miles traveled or total pollutants emitted anyway.

    2. I want to get laid off, intimidate my younger hot-shot boss into a generous severance package, buy a Firebird, get a huge bag of weed from the neighbor kid, start lifting weights in the garage and bang my daughter's hot high school friend. Not sure how it ends, though.

    3. I'm a 41 year old dad, but I'm afraid I don't match up with the rest of your criteria. I live downtown, not the burbs. I have a sort steady job that is really only 4 days/week and that I would not have at all if my wife would let me. I'm very wishy-washy. I like doing stuff for the kids, but I much prefer to do stuff WITH them, like playing hooky and going to the science centre or the zoo or wherever. I do, however, have a small less-polluting single-seater AKA a bicycle, possibly not much use in the burbs. And I can tow a double Chariot with it when the girls and I play hooky.
I think I'd like to replace the Beetle with a Seven one day, if that's any help.

    4. Right, so, it seems like a part of this target group is going through what is called a "mid-life crisis", and I suspect there are also "closet crisis" cases wandering in the power tools section of a Canadian Tire.
Thanks y'all! And the transportation vehicle in question is a scooter, as in Vespa. I think I have my work cut out for me.

      1. As your attorney, I advise you to take notes on Hooniverse commentary about how to make minivans cool.

  2. There's no such thing as "too much lightness".
I see a spoiler that I'd ditch… and maybe a mirror… and those wheels and brakes are unnecessarily large for such a small car… and…

  3. Spike the brakes on something like that and you are going to look like a soccer ball rolling across a field.
