So, the Orphan Car Show was rained out last week, but an impromptu gathering at the Ypsilanti Auto Heritage Museum’s (AKA Miller Motors) parking lot saved the weekend. And we get to waste another Sunday Morning staring at the pictures that Mike took.
From Mike’s e-mail:
Junkman brought his mystery car, but it never got out of the trailer:-( He sent me a couple of pics of it, but I haven’t included them here. I did suggest to him that he submit the pics here along with the history of the car, for a “Guess The Car” feature. I hope he does, because it’s a neat car that I can find virtually no history of anywhere on the web.
Junkman, if you’re reading this…. send them in. Meanwhile, here are the pictures:
Did I say it was rained out? My bad, it was flooded out. I wish I had gotten a picture of the park (which is a flood plain), but take my word, about half of it was literally underwater. Looking at the pics, I sure took a Lada pictures of that Niva, didn't I? That's mainly because I had never seen one in the metal before and partly because I know the guys who own it (one of them even hangs out around here, sometimes).
Yeah, I've been known to drop in on occasion. 🙂 Great pics, Mike! Rumor has it that the show is going to be rescheduled for sometime in September, so hopefully me, and(more importantly) the Niva will be able to find our way back down for that show. With any luck the next trip down will prove to be a more trouble free drive. That poor ole Lada barely made it down due to some eleventh hour technical difficulties. All in all it was a fun day, though!
Flood or not Mike, what a great collection of vehicles! The only thing that could have made this any better would have been more room around each car to allow more pictures/angles. Thanks for sharing!
Ha, the blue Dyane was in the same shape when I bought one in 1981. Great pics.
I like the comparison pics of the Corvair Lakewood next to the Commander. The lil wagon is just as tall as the door handles on the Stupid Utility Vehicle
I know I'm going to sound like jerk when I say this but I can't help myself.
If you're going to take your car to a car show is it too much to ask to at least make sure you have all the hubcaps on and that you've cleaned the engine bay in the last 2 years? Don't even get me started on the car that's not in a "ratrod" show that's missing 90% of its paint. Jeezus people, show some pride.
On the upside there are some really nice cars in this set. I'm in love with that Hudson Hornet.
What is that little white coupe with the “1200” badging? And I can’t say I’ve seen a Corvair wagon before…thanks!
It's an NSU Prinz 1200C.
From the registration brochure "We encourage the participation of unrestored vehicles." The Packard to which you refer (and, to a lesser extent, the ratty Rambler parked behind it) got a great deal of positive attention from the show-goers. It's just that kind of show.
Sorry I missed this gathering. It was very early when I went to Riverside Park, saw the show was cancelled and stopped in at Miller Motors. Other than Jack and a couple guys on the organizing committee, no one was there so I rounded up the family for a world class breakfast at the Bomber (always a highlight when visiting Ypsi). We visited with a lot of car guys there and then set sail for the long tow home. They should be careful not to conflict with Pebble Beach if they reschedule the event this year…
I love unrestored vehicles. After looking at and not touching all of the museum pieces, seeing something a little rough around the edges and can be very refreshing. Especially if the owner lets you touch it.
You've never been to Ypsi, have you?
I wound up on here a couple weeks ago and I absolutely cannot get enough! Please keep writing!
