Hooniverse Goes To The Amelia Island Concours D'Elegance

So yesterday was the 18th annual Amelia Island Concours D’Elegance and this olelongrooffan took my newish longerroof out onto I-95 and hot footed it up there to hook up with fellow Hoon The Mad Hungarian. We saw pretty much all that could be seen on the 17th and 18th fairways of the Ritz Carlton beachfront resort. Seriously, probably $200-300 million dollars worth of cars. Cadillac concepts from the 50s, rear engined Corvette, 15-20 Ford GT 40s, and Porsche racecars out the butt. And more. Many more.

But the one that really surprised me the most was this one. All of the images I have seen of it across these here interwebs made me think I hated it. But in reality, in person that front fascia is not all that ugly. Even the King of Automotive Trivia, The Mad Hungarian, agreed with this olelongrooffan on that one.

That’s it for now. It’s BikeWeek here in the World Center of Racing and I gots some trailers to schlep. Stay tuned more some more of the 240+ images I grabbed yesterday.

Oh! Did I mention Bentley longroof?

    1. I'd like to have a look at that family tree. =8^)
And I must say, I am not just jealous about you guys being able to have a proper look at so many cool cars. Shorts and sandals ftw! I woke up to 17 degrees F this morning.

          1. Aha, THAT is what the Spohn's fins look like! For some reason yesterday I was thinking Imperial, but I knew that was a bit off.

    1. You mean the Fascination? That's the first, umm, thing. That and the Spohns and a few other oddities have a class of their own at Amelia called What Were They Thinking?

      1. It is amazing. We attended the same show together and remember different things about it. I had seen that sign but totally forgot about it until you mentioned it here. Should have grabbed an image of it. Great Time Frank. Thanks for sharing it with me.

          1. I look forward to Friday! I have 108P……….I blah, blah, blah more than you do, I guess.

    1. I'd click +1 because I was thinking it too, but sorry – I just can't condone posting that image in a public place.

    2. Yeah, that's different from the one at Amelia. That one is trying too hard to be a mid 70's Oldsmobile.

  1. Amelia, was there yesterday. Going through my photos. Thought the GT40 was more like 10, whatever they were way cool. Probably won't see a gathering of them in these numbers for a long time. Favorite car, McLaren F1. Son's got to sit in the new P1. Interesting review….eldest said that getting out of it was a bit of a pain. He's about 6'1". One of my favorites: BMW 3.0CSL Art Car http://www.flickr.com/photos/27194215@N00/8546902

  2. What's the newish longerroof? Are we supposed to call it Waldo and pretend nothing changed (see Darrin Stevens on Bewitched, Aunt Viv on Fresh Prince of Bel Air, or Lassie in the series and movies), or is this one Waldo, Jr.?

        1. Were it indeed a wagon, he would have called it a longroof instead of a longerroof. The question is, what vehicle has a longer roof than a single-cab Comanche? The answer could be just about anything.

          1. I'm hoping LRF's brother let him get an Amazon wagon. That or it got was warm enough for the CBS.

  3. Could someone please sate my curiosity and let me know who made the "Fascination" and all other details about it. It looks like a full size Gerry Anderson creation.

    1. Here's what I know: It was made by a company called the "Highway Aircraft Corporation," the prototypes were powered by a propeller until that broke and they had to go with normal propulsion, and only five were made before the company went bust.

      1. Apparently it got stranger than that. Paul Lewis, developer of the Fascination, hooked up with Edwin Gray, who claimed to be developing a miracle engine, or more accurately a miracle electric motor, that recharged its own batteries by pulling static electricity out of the air — or something like that; his explanations tended to devolve into gibberish as you might expect. Lewis created promotional material that said the Fascination would be produced with Renault engines until the Gray motor was ready: http://www.cheniere.org/misc/gray.htm

  4. "Seriously, probably $200-300 million dollars worth of cars. Cadillac concepts from the 50s, rear engined Corvette, 15-20 Ford GT 40s, and Porsche racecars"
Lets see some of these cars! They sound way cooler than a Jeep Grand Cherokee!
