This beast started life as a 1982 Chevrolet pickup. It became a mud truck. Then it was switched up for rock crawling. Today, it’s a unique rescue rig that plucks other people out of trouble in Moab. Owner Rory Irish uses his Trail Mater to help others in literally tough spots.
Under the hood, this rig features a healthy V8 and its fuel injected. Out back you’ll find a wide track thanks to the swapped-in rear dually setup borrowed from a Dodge. Trail Mater has six winches, tons of spares and tools, and a driver with a willingness to stop and help.
This is a very cool trail rig. Share some others in the comments below. Read more about Rory’s truck at BFGoodrich’s Garage page, or check him out on Instagram.
It’s still the Fat Hippo.

2008 Trek Fuel EX8 mountain bike, you supply power but it goes anywhere your strength and courage allow. I got 13 years out of mine before the frame broke.
Dang, that’s a good run!
I recently replaced my used 2015 Trek fuel EX9 which I bought used, with the 2020 Fuel EX9.8 – and I love this damn thing. Already upgraded the uppers on the fork, the dropper, and I’ve got some great tires on there right now.
My trail rig is my Swamp Donkey. Started life as a tw200 and ended up here. I primarily use it for riding to the beach. Our access is a loose sand trail and this beast eats it up. I have also taken it Trail riding and it performed amazingly. My friends that were there all took a spin on it and most of them are in the process of building something similar. I’m also building another.
