Hooniverse Asks: Into what would you stuff this brand-new VW VR5 engine?

By Jeff Glucker Dec 20, 2018

No, I don’t mean VR6. I’m talking about a brand-new Volkswagen VR5. There’s one for sale on eBay right now and the project car possibilities here are rather intriguing. If you’re not familiar with the VR5,

Jalopnik has a good explainer on it. The basics of it are that VW created a more compact version of its rather awesome VR6 motor. This one sounds better though, and that’s because of the unequal length intake runners.

Add a proper exhaust and it sounds like this: (Ignore the music at the beginning of the video, it gets to exhaust noise shortly after… or don’t and bop along to some Snoop)

The one for sale on eBay is a brand-new 2.3-liter VR5 that appears to have nearly everything you need to get it running. The asking price is $1,898. And our own Tanshanomi spotted it and wants to drop it into a T-Bucket hot rod just to have three chrome headers on one side and two on the other.

What would you drop this engine into?

  1. I am actually working on gathering parts for a VR5 VW Fox swap. And by the way…you wouldn’t have 3 exhaust runners on one side of the motor and 2 on the other with a VR5. It only has one cylinder head and the exhaust ports are all on one side.
