Honda Talon 1000x-4 off-road

Honda Talon 1000X-4 Fox Live Valve Review

A few years back we tested the two-seater Honda Talon. It’s awesome and we fell in love with side-by-sides that day. Flash-forward to today and Honda has expanded the sport side of its SxS lineup with a four-seat Talon option. We got our hands on the Talon 1000X-4. It packs the same 999-cc engine as the rest of the Talon lineup, but our model also wears Fox Live Valve shocks at all four corners.

It has a dual-clutch 6-speed gearbox, a ton of suspension travel, excellent steering and brakes, and it’s even better than the two-seater because we can bring more friends along for the ride.

If you want to buy one, the four-seat Talon starts at $21,999 and the Fox Live Valve model is $23,999. Tons of dough for a toy, but perfectly in line with the segment and competition. In fact, people are spending far more than that on these things. Business is booming in the side-by-side space, and the Talon is poised to party.

[Disclaimer: Honda let us borrow a Ridgeline, a trailer, and a Talon, and we covered all of it with dust and dirt.]

I spent a day a couple of weeks ago with a friend playing with his Honda SxS at the other end of the line up – a Pioneer 500. He’s added a locking diff to the front with makes this little guy very capable. At 50″ wide it’s narrow enough for lots of trails that the Talon would be a handful in, like the muddy, narrow wooded trails we were on. It was a lot of fun. I even managed to put it on it’s side (shortcoming of the narrow width). No harm done, the group chipped in and flipped it wheels side down and we carried on.

I’d love to try a Talon some time in someplace appropriate. I’m not sure there are a lot of those here in Ohio.

I might have a thin justification to swap my Trans Am for a 4 seat SxS. I know my family would be supportive, which is about all I need to go change something up with toys.
