I enjoy doodling, but I’ve never been anything resembling an artist. Growing up, my book covers and papers would be filled with poorly shaped sketches of everything from cars to the Cool S, and anything in between. I wish I could’ve seen these awesome tutorials by Stefan Marjoram when I was younger. He does an excellent job of showing you how to draw a vehicle, starting with simple steps and gradually making it more complex and realistic as he proceeds. A perfect example of this would be the recent video that shows how to draw an old 40 Series Toyota Land Cruiser.
An old-school off-roader is typically a box on wheels. That’s what we’re working with on this old Land Cruiser, too. But it’s the proportions that Stefan highlights that separate a simple doodle from a great sketch. There are excellent tips and tricks along the way relating to shadows, details, tire shape, and perspective.
Grab a pencil or pen and a piece of paper. Then hit play and follow along, and I think you’ll be pretty happy with your end result. Even if it’s not as good as Stefan’s, it will still turn out cool… because you’re having fun and drawing a car, just like when you were a kid.
