Genesis is carving out its own unique brand identity, and it’s doing it with fresh looks, well-built machines, and actual luxury. The flagship for the automaker is the new GV80 SUV and it’s here to fully compete with German and Japanese offerings. We sample a very nicely equipped GV80 3.5T with its 375-horsepower engine and come away quite impressed. This is a great vehicle.
[Disclaimer: Genesis tossed us the keys to the GV80 and included a tank of fuel.]
The rotary shifter knob you liked so well is being discussed a lot on the Korean Equus forum I follow. People are trying to manufacture these into their Hyundai luxury sedans of the last decade.
Also, about price…50k$ is what people here buy Passat wagons for. I try to remind myself that good things come off our taxes, but this one is hard.
Wait, did I hear you correctly that the base model doesn’t include a wireless phone charger? Yet my Kia, which costs less than half the price of this luxury SUV, does? That seems like a rather odd choice.
It’s not my kind of car (because I tend to eschew luxury) but it’s impressive. People can like it or not, but anyone who poo-poos it as not being a legitimate contender in its class is just a German-brand snob. The superficial glow from “prestige” badges doesn’t warm me in the slightest.
I was curious how Hyundai could come so far, then I watched The Economy of South Korea on the Economics Explained channel on Youtube.
