For Sale: Does this Daihatsu Rocky have you dreaming of dusty trails?

a red daihatsu rocky we found for sale

You do not see a ton of Daihatsu products roaming the streets. If you’re going to come across one, it’s probably going to be either a HiJet, a Charade, or a Rocky. Today we’re talking about that last one, because I just found one for sale on Craigslist. It’s a 1991 Rocky located in Laguna Hills, and it’s wearing a ton of miles on its little four-cylinder engine.  Over 165k, in fact. Despite that, the seller thinks this truck is worth a touch over $5,000. What do you think?

These things are definitely stout little over-roaders. You’ve got a four-wheel-drive setup, a five-speed manual gearbox, and a 1.6-liter engine. You can lock the front axle and try to use all 90 or so horsepower to scramble over rocks and up your favorite trail. Basically you have a quasi-cool rig that everyone will confuse for a Suzuki Samurai.

This one looks like it could be a lot of fun, but that price would need to come down. Yes, it’s rare to see here but that doesn’t mean it’s automatically worth more than other vehicles with less mileage and in better shape. This one is missing the back seat, for example. And I don’t know of a great supplier of Rocky seats, if you wanted to replace that. But it does also have a working winch and some knobby tires. You’d likely be fine to head straight to the trail assuming there are no mechanical issues that need sorting.

This truck is interesting, that’s for sure. And you can find the listing by clicking here.

  1. Lots of potential, but I agree that the price is too steep. I prefer them with hardtops– not interested in softies.

  2. Can’t get over that rear wheel cutout…the Rocky used to be quite popular here, but road salt has taken care of most of them. There’s none for sale in Norway right now, only 12 Daihatsu overall. Surprising…

  3. I am dreaming of dealing with those three dudes on the internet that know everything about them to find parts to keep it running.

  4. The Rocky is my favorite mini SUV from this era, but this particular example is too far battered for my tastes.
