A comfortable commuter car can be a nice thing to have if you’re driving to and from an office every day. It doesn’t need to be a cheap econo-box, though. There are more interesting options out there. Some of them even wear that wonderful three-pointed star from Mercedes-Benz. Take this 1998 SL500 I just found on Craigslist. The asking price isn’t terrible, relative to today’s automotive marketplace, and it’s overall a pretty clean machine on the outside.

Per the seller, the car has low miles. I guess 112,000 on a 27-year-old car does equal low miles. After all, that’s not even 4,200 miles per year. There’s no check engine light. The car passed smog. And the seller states it drives with zero issues. The only flaw is that the hydraulic pump for the convertible top is likely leaking. The ad states it needs fluid added for it to work well.

Still, with an asking price under $7,000, this could be an excellent daily driver, assuming that the engine has been kept in good running order. Would you take a chance on this one, or is the interior a bit too beat up for your tastes? Also, it’s certainly a gamble because when something breaks, it will not be cheap to fix.
