Welcome to the Hooniverse Classic Captions Post, and once again it’s that time of the week in which this feature appears like clockwork, so let’s review the premise; I search for images that were used by the car or truck companies in their print advertising or brochures, and it is your job to provide a humorous caption that is some how tied in with the image. This week I showcase an image ripped from the year 1984, at the beginning of the home computer revolution, but we will get back to that in a moment… Last time, we had a picture of an International Pickup with a lot of numbers surrounding it, and the number of participants was almost back to normal, so let’s see who the front runners were this time, shall we? Our runner-up in this particular caption contest was from dwbf11, and it ties in the past host from the popular game show, “The Price is Right”, and it went like this: “A rare look inside Bob Barker’s brain revealed some troubling fantasies”. How do you guys think this stuff up? This was very funny, and it was actually my personal favorite, but there was one other that seemed to be your favorite this time… And the winning comment once again came from smalleyxb122, and it was very suggestive (though not really unexpected): “To be an International man, you must first study a broad.” Or three as a mater of fact, so congratulations smalleyxb122 on winning the classic caption contest this time. It’s now time to take a look at this weeks entry, and yes, I was trolling around Alden Jewell’s Flickr Photostream for some retro photographic advertising images again and this one kept saying very bad things to me, so I said what the hell… This is an image that was used at Oldsmobile Dealers for the 1984 model year, and it shows a Father and his Kid (I would only assume it is his kid, but I digress) carrying out a new Apple II Personal Computer from a local retailer. So, they bought what was a state-of-the-art computer, while driving a car that was firmly stuck in the past. Look at the Oldsmobile Styling Cues for a moment… 1/2 vinyl roof, Wire Wheel Covers, Whitewall Tires, and yea, it does have a Stand-up Hood Ornament. Remember, at the same time this was produced, Chevrolet produced an identical car in the form of a Celebrity Eurosport, without even a lick of chrome anywhere, while Pontiac produced the 6000 STE, which was a (somewhat) serious contender to the Audi 5000 Sedan. So, what does this image tell you about the owner of the Oldsmobile? Let’s see if you can make sense of this image by creating a caption of your own. (You can click here to see the full size image) You have the next five days to come up with a great caption. The editors will deliberate on the merits of each entry, and after contemplating our own caption (I never did own an Apple II…), we will pronounce a winner. So, get to work and create you’re own caption for this very dated image. Photo Credit: Alden Jewell’s Flickr Photostream
