Classic Captions – The 1967 International Harvester Pickup Edition

14261754657_5e22b25bea_b Welcome to the Hooniverse Classic Captions Post, and it’s that time of the week in which this feature appears like clockwork, so let’s review the premise; I search for images that were used by the car or truck companies in their print advertising or brochures, and it is your job to provide a humorous caption that is some how tied in with the image. And this week I decided to raid Alden Jewell’s Flickr Photostream once again with this very unusual image from 1967, but we will get to that in a moment… tumblr_l3rbntaiyv1qanlclo1_1280 Last time, we had an image of a young couple with a converted Toyota Celica, and I really stopped caring about the participation rate because this feature is very enlightening, dammit! But let’s get to the front runners in this particular caption contest, and I need to start with an explanation. You see, I ran a Weekend Edition Posting about a Toyota Celica Sunrunner, and chastised the dealer for placing the ad without so much as a rudimentary description of the car, just about 100 words describing the dealer itself. You can see that post by clicking here! Anyway, it was nanoop who just took the essence of that post, and tied it into his caption, like so: “Bert and Judy were really happy that they found this hint on hooniverse, because East Coast Toyota-Scion is the recent recipient of the Board of Governor’s Award, the President’s Award, and a Circle of Excellence Award. These accolades are only awarded to dealers achieving record sales while offering the highest level of customer service in the industry…. Well I’ll stop here…” Way to throw it back into my face nanoop, but it was a very funny comeback. The only thing is this: There was one caption that was just a bit sharper… And the winning comment once again came Devin, and it was ironically humorous in it’s simplicity: “Gary’s attempts to get Liz topless only resulted in a modified Celica.” See, like I said, simplicity. So congratulations Devin on winning the classic caption contest this time. It’s now time to take a look at this weeks entry, and once again I was trolling around Alden Jewell’s Flickr Photostream for some retro photographic advertising images (He seems to batch them in groups of between 4 and 12 each time he uploads new images) and I wasn’t going to run another International Pickup image so soon (the last one was on April 22nd of this year) but how can I not… Look at this image… It has it all… Let’s start with the lovely women, one Blonde, one Brunette, and one Red Head. Don’t you love the swingin’ sixties fashion? So, I have to ask, why is the guy in the picture on the passenger side of the truck, and what is he smiling about? The numbers you see at the top of the truck? This is tied in with the ad pitch that says: “This Year’s Smartest Numbers”. Well that really tells me… nothing, nothing whatsoever! Let’s see if you can make sense of this image by creating a caption of your own. (You can click here to see the full size image) You have the next five days to come up with a great caption. The editors will deliberate on the merits of each entry, and after contemplating our own caption (This Year’s Smartest Numbers… of what?), we will pronounce a winner. So, get to work and create you’re own caption for this whacked-out image. Photo Credit: Alden Jewell’s Flickr Photostream
