Classic Captions – The 1965 Pontiac Bonneville (Hertz Car Rental) Edition

advertising images2-004 Welcome to the Hooniverse Classic Captions Post, and once again, it’s that time of the week in which this feature appears, so let’s review the premise; I search for images that were used by the car companies in their print advertising or brochures, and it is your job to provide a humorous caption that is some how tied in with the image. Thanks to all of our fans here on the ‘verse, the participation level was a little better last week, so I have come to the conclusion that my choice in imagery has been the culprit, so I vow that I will try and do a lot better in the future, and I think I found a great image this time, but let’s get to that in a moment… car advertisement Last time, we had an image of a Car Factory Fantasy, and it was the first time I used an illustration and not a photograph, so it looks like more renderings like this will become a part of this series in the future. All of the entries were top notch, very clever, and some were extremely funny. The runner-up comment was from needthatcar, who commented on one Model’s work performance: “Tiffany, are you using a hair dryer on the lug nuts?!? No, no, wait…don’t cry…it’s good, seriously. Those nuts needed to be warmed up. You’re doing great.” Very funny needthatcar, but there was one comment that was just a tad sharper this time… Fullscreen capture 5262014 22341 PM.bmp And the winning comment was from I_Borgward, and it was submitted with the image you see on the right. He used mental imagery with just the right words to create an unforgettable picture, and it went as follows: “The Dream: (using the original Dream Factory Image) The Reality: (Using the image on the right) This was so well done, eliciting an “I Hate You Now” comment from Tanshanomi, and quite possibly a few groans from out fans as well, that I can only congratulate I_Borgward on producing the winning caption this time. It’s now time to take a look at this weeks entry, and I found this image from 1965 for the Hertz Rent-A-Car company with their near decade long tag-line of “Hertz Puts You in the Driver’s Seat” message. There were TV spots in which you saw a man in a business suit gliding down into a Full-Size convertible, with the bright yellow (or simply light grey if you only had a Black & White television) Hertz logo displayed at the end of the commercial. This image was just an extension of the TV spots, used in national Magazines like Life, Look, The Saturday Evening Post, National Geographic, and of course TV Guide. It is amazing that these ads all used Convertibles, since these were the glamour cars of their day, but it was your everyday, run-of-the-mill sedan that made up the majority of the Hertz Fleet during this time period, and they didn’t turn them over as often as they do today. Let’s make this a bonus round this time… Try and name the Airline, as well as the Aircraft Model that the businessman is jumping from! (You can click here to see the full size image) You have the next five days to come up with a great caption. The editors will deliberate on the merits of each entry, and after contemplating our own caption (I don’t think the guy is going to land in the car, by the way!), we will pronounce a winner. So, get to work and create you’re own caption for this rather unusual image. Photo Credit: Christian Montone’s Flickr Photostream
