That’d be the Ford Flathead, the predecessor to the Chevy small-block as the hot rodders’ go-to engine. Ate Up With Motor, a more scholastic friend of Hooniverse has a great writeup on the flathead, Henry and his company through the same period covered in Merchants of Speed (the 20s-50s).
