2025 GR86 Hakone Edition – Green, Gold, and Great

By Jeff Glucker Sep 4, 2025

The 2025 GR86 Hakone Edition from Toyota is all about enjoying your driving experience. There’s not a ton of power, but there’s enough. The steering feel is excellent. Pairing the Sachs dampers and the Brembo brakes equals excellent chassis upgrades. And if you want to slide it, you can absolutely get this thing sideways and hold it there.

Such a fun machine… even if THIS specific one has the wrong gearbox bolted in place.

  1. In all seriousness, how is this transmission. I’ve heard some reviewers state that it is quite good for a torque converter auto. My preference is a manual but may concede to a decent auto so my wife can drive it. ( She can and has driven my previous manual. Cars/trucks but doesn’t like it)

    Thanks

    1. It’s totally fine. It’s not exciting, but it gets the job done well enough. Smoother off the line than a DCT too.
