As has been demonstrated many times by this olelongrooffan and many of my fellow Hoons, sometimes the coolest cars are the ones seen in the lot while attending an automotive related event. The same proved to be true last weekend while I was attending the 2013 Rolex24 at Daytona.
This group of Samba’s made the trek down from the greater Jacksonville area to provide their support to this year’s Grand Marshall Hurley Haywood as well as Brumo’s Porsche. All four of the Samba’s were tricked out and, while they appeared to be rusty ole buses, their engine compartments are immaculate.
This ole Westie was probably my favorite. It has oversize tires on it and I checked to see if it was all wheel drive. It possessed what I remember to be standard, stock Volkswagen front suspension on it. Based on its exhaust note, this olelongrooffan is quite confident it possessed slightly more horsepower out back than it arrived with on this side of the pond.
It seems like these guys have been coming down for the five or six years and every year there seems to be more of them in attendance. I captured these images in the early afternoon on Saturday and several more rolled in prior to the start of the Rolex24.
All of them were of the same theme and looked quite nice to this olelongrooffan. And just to show there are some cool cars in the lot, check out the now defunct Crossfire in the background of the above image.
As I was heading into TheFanZone and garages area, this London cab passed me by on that access road just beyond the Universal Horseshoe which is just off to the left in this image. I thought it would be long gone by the time I arrived up there.
As it turns out, a fleet of shuttle buses were passing through that intersection and the security dude held up that cab so this olelongrooffan could catch up and grab a couple, three images of it to share with my fellow Hoons.
This is the first sighting of one of these I have seen in the flesh and certainly got a kick out of its sighting that day.
And upon my return to our base camp, I spotted this DeLorean parked outside the motorcoach parked next door alongside the west horseshoe of the infield road course.
This one was equipped with the infamous Peugeot-Renault-Volvo engine mated with an automatic transmission. That sure drew a bunch of chuckles from the former wrenches this olelongrooffan was camped out with that weekend.
But no matter poor the quality of this gullwing was, there are still idiots guys out there willing to fork over big bucks for one of their own.
And reading this booklet is mandatory.

It's getting to the point that whenever "coke" is mentioned in a car blog post, there's gonna be a DeLorean somewhere. Personally I like them… but the coke and BTTF references will forever cloud this car.
Other than that, great post. LOVE the London cab, has anyone else noted that it's LHD? Must be an export model, except I didn't know that they were ever exported when new…
China probably
I saw a bunch in SF a few years back, but I can't remember if they were LHD or not.
And now Volvo's parent, Geely, is on their way to owning/building them.
I'll probably never understand the (Volkswagen fans) love for the rusty look…
I think they refer to it as patina, but yeah…….rust. I don't get it either. ;D
I'll probably never understand the (Volkswagen fans) love for Volkswagens.
Sorry.
I can get the 'barn find, leave it alone' look. It's the guys doing Jettas and 5 Series. I can't wait to see "rust" on aluminum.
I like DeLoreans and their stainless steel finish. The license plate on this one is very clever………FLUX.
This one was somewhat less subtle.

Greetings, fellow denizen of the Pacific Northwet!
I knew there were a number of us here at the 'verse, didn't realize you were one.

I still really like the simple design of the DeLorean. And…stainless steel! That alone is worth some love. But if I had one I'd probably replace the awful PRV with an awesome red block, preferably the B230FX. That one makes just the appropriate space ship noise when cold – and I could tell everyoen, with a good consciousness, that, yes, it's powered by Volvo.
Well, stainless steel veneer, anyway. Still cool. I'll have a PRV Turbo transplant from an Alpine in mine, please.
I am all into van camping, I think thats where some of the VW van thing comes in. Station Wagons, Suburbans etc too!
Unfettered travel is wonderful. Sometimes I live in a van down by the river….
What are you when you're in your van? boxdin of course….
Just stumpled upon this DeLorean-ish countdown. Great! http://www.october212015.com/
