So it has previously been mentioned The Mad Hungarian and this olelongrooffan hooked up at the Amelia Island Concours this past weekend. After I crashed the gates on the way in (see upcoming Fastback Friday’s post for details on that), I stopped over to check out the new Corvette C7 on the 18th green of the Ritz Carlton’s golf course and then moseyed on down to check out some Cadillac concept cars from the 50’s. While I was doing just that, my trusty communications device started letting me know someone needed to talk to this olelongrooffan. It was, of course, The Mad Hungarian wanting to know where I was and he had seen something this olelongrooffan would love. It turns out we were literally less than 50 feet from each other. Upon seeing him, he walked up, grabbed my arm and said to me, “You have got to see this.” And no, that cool Fluid Drive Chrysler woody above is not it, my fellow Hoons will have to make the jump to see it. Trust me, it’s worth that move.
I could not help but to capture this image of the Lucas driving light on the front of this beauty. Sorry about the capture of that Hoon squatting down to get that image. But damn that bumper is gorgeous. And check out the reflection of the Skye on this glorious Chamber of Commerce type day here on Amelia Island.
Even the interior of this British born fox is gorgeous. I believe that wood is “burl wood” or something similar. If this was a Ford that wood would have been derived from the massive forests FOMOCO owned in northern Michigan just for this purpose and their woodys.
But no, it’s definitely not a Ford. The Mad Hungarian and I both thought it reminded us of something almost Mercede-ish but alas that was not the case. I can hear my fellow Hoons yelling at this olelongrooffan, “What the hell is so exciting about an old Bentley?” Well, my fellow Hoons, this is no mere Bentley, it’s a
LONGROOF. BENTLEY. FROM THE 50’s.
Yeah, The Mad Hungarian was correct in stating that I would love this thing. Hell, this was the first longroof product of the Bentley/Rolls Royce persuasion this olelongrooffan has even seen in the flesh.
But wait! Is that the concept Corvette Stingray over there?
Gotta go.

Just what year was that made? I'll let the experts comment on the Mercedes W numbers but that looks like a mix of fintail back end with a slightly later style side crease leading to 60's MB headlights. Just what is original Bentley? The nosecap for sure, the interior for sure and running gear we can assume. Who made it? Even the windshield and side doors look like Mercedes originals.
Gorgeous cars, but….
Ahhh, this is going to drive me nuts now!
This post has reminded me that in "The World According to Garp" the wife has an affair. The reason she gets away with it so long is her other man drives an enormous woody (snicker, snicker) station wagon in which she can hide.
I think it might have been a Buick, but I can't remember. Nor do I own that book anymore to look it up.
Any ideas?

Found it! 1951 Buick Roadmaster Dynaflow.
It is a 1941 Chrysler Town and Country.

That ol' longroof is indeed a thing of beauty, but it is also a Frankenstinian mix of two worthy marques. I pronounce it the Benztley Mansion-Wagen.
Did some digging- here are my results- MAKE THE JUMP! http://www.rrab.com/s2wend.htm
Ayup; you beat me to it. If I am reading that site correctly, there is not a single Benz part on this car, although many of said parts are exact copies of Mercedes parts made by Wendler, at their client's request. So this machine is rolling proof that the customer is always right.
Do you realize how much rare stuff we saw last weekend? It freakin' amazes me still.
Absolutely unbelievable. I cant even imagine what I would do with that much cubic money. Aside from my CTS-V powered riding mower. Maybe have an enormous Renault Dauphine body overstretching a Tucker frame….
Awesome find my Miata driving friend.
I don't have a Miata. I'd love to, but I'm down to just my Y2K Crown Vic Interceptor.
sorry man, I thought stigshift was the tag name of my fellow Hoon I met at DIS last fall. An Interceptor is totally acceptable though.
Funny thing is that I'm borrowing a friend's Miata tomorrow for a little road trip. To Spring Hell from Dunedin and back. Beats The Villages…
Hey Man…I'm going to be road tripping it around the Sunshine State starting this weekend and heading north from Naples…Want to hook up and check out some car related sites around the Tampa Bay area?
Is there some Xzibit action going on in the trunk of that woody?
Great stuff, man. Looking forward to hearing more from Amelia Island.
I saw a nearly identical Chrysler woody here in Columbus in 2010. Except this one was a '42, which made it very rare indeed.
