I got a call from my wife on Friday with an interesting question about a convertible VW bus in front of her store. Needless to say, I was intrigued. What she sent me were some pictures of this short, weird, orange bus with roll bars. Interested as I was? Take the jump to see more.
As it turns out, the bus in question in something called the Loafster, a shortened and chopped 1966 Volkswagen bus. It is on tour across the country, along with the Tillatruck and the Baby Loaf Bus. Tillamook is promoting its delicious cheese (yes, I’m biased, but it really is good), and they wanted to do something to catch people’s attention. They certainly caught mine.
According to the head builder, Bryan, every single piece of this bus has been reworked, refurbished, refinished, or removed, bringing the little machine back to like-new condition. You can clearly see the amount of work that went into making this.
Even the original air-cooled engine got a thorough refurbishing. I’ve never seen one this clean – it almost doesn’t look real!
Most of the time, when a company uses a promotional vehicle, it’s just a regular car with a vinyl wrap on it, or something stuck on the roof. With Tillamook, they decided to build their own, down to the color-matched medium cheddar cheese paint. I invite you to check out the video below with more details about the build process. Enjoy.
