V.I.S.I.T: Land of the Rising Sun, Zero inspired Datsun 240Z

Way back when in the time Independence Day was the top movie in the box office and the Macarena was permanently burned into our memories, I was perfecting my skills in driving a manual transmission. I first learned when I was 14 on a 1984 Maserati Biturbo that my father had at the time. I fumbled and bumbled.
With the next offering, a 1987 Honda Civic and with its forgiving clutch and robust transmission, I finally got it down. However, it wasn’t until I first drove my friends 1981 Datsun 280ZX that I felt I actually knew what I was doing and enjoyed what fun a rear wheel drive manual transmission car could be like.
While the 280ZX was not particularly loved in the Z car lineage, 16 year old me enjoyed every minute of it and we had our adventures running around Dallas, Texas. It’s safe to say I have a soft spot in my heart for any old Nissan/Datsun offerings.
That makes this particular find rather special to me.

With a quite interesting Mitsubishi Z6M Zero inspired paint job, Watanabe R-Type inspired wheels, fender mounted mirrors and lovely tack on fender flares it’s hard to find any flaw with this Z Car. Some may hate the paint and I get it, but I also find beauty in how this example has been executed. Reinvigorating my love for old Japanese iron this car really moved me today.

Fun Fact: My friend still has his 280ZX and a newly acquired NC Miata to join his stable.

Jason, did we see that 240Z on V.I.S.I.T. the other day?

Yes. It was followed by a bunch of bad WWII references.

Oh yes this is the one.. And it's officially the most controversial car ever posted to the V.I.S.I.T Facebook page. I had already written this post before it got all crazy there and definitely everything needed to be curtailed a bit with all the "comments" that were made.

Those look like real Watanabe Rs to me, haven't really seen any knockoffs that look that good. And damn do they look good. Wide Wats, ZG flares, the BRE chin and rear spoilers, this is basically perfection to me.

It does look good, and it's nice and low, but not stanced.

There is a company in Malaysia that makes Watanabe clone wheels I just can't remember the name.
This Z was about the ideal version in tasteful modifications. Perhaps a dark green with the red dot would be just as cool but a bit too close to resembling a Zero.
Regardless, I just about fell in love with the Z car again.

The beauty of the red dot is that I wouldn't be surprised if it was just a piece of vinyl. Pull it off and viola, no more bad WWII comments.

Rota makes a pretty good clone called the RK-R, but there are subtle differences in the spoke shape that aren't present here.

I suppose now that both of my grandfathers are dead, I could feasibly put such a vehicle in my driveway. I'd probably still prefer olive-green with a shark mouth, though:
