V.I.S.I.T – GTI Edition

Relatives.

Walking to the office this morning, I couldn’t help but notice not one, but two GTI’s sitting together. Both of them are black, both of them are lowered, both of them look good. I had a few minutes to spare, so I stopped to get a few shots from my phone.

What we have are Mk4 and Mk5 Golf GTI’s. The Mk5 GTI is all black except for the red accent around the grille. The MkIV has the added benefit of a two bar, if that does it for you. I don’t know much VW’s, so I will let you guys fill in some of the performance details.

I know which one I prefer. What about you?

Mk V all the way. I liked its looks since the first time I saw it in pictures and the whole package just works for me. The fact that its engine doesn't have the reputation of being a time bomb helps too

It's funny, I like the MKV GTI more than the MKIV GTI, but I like the MKIV R32 more than the MKV R32. Go figure.

I'm torn. I really don't like when anything is lowered from factory spec; I kind of empathise with all those OEM chassis engineers who spent so much time optimising the settings. And I kind of have a problem with the whole 'Dub "scene"; it seems a bit too easy, "me too", "instant image", like suddenly wearing a Sex Pistols T-shirt and telling everybody you're punk.
But then, I drive an A4 with staggered AMG monoblocks on the sole basis that I love how it looks. Which makes me a hypocrite.
And MkIV please. On looks over ability.

I agree with Rust-My-Enemy, messing with the OEM chassis tuning usually screws up the whole ride. The Mk4 had four inches of ground clearance from the factory, why make it any lower?
The 1.8T Mk4 GTI shown in the pic is a fun car with the rev happy 5 valve per cylinder engine with a lot of tuning options. I am a little polarized with the Mk5, Although the chassis is technically superior It has the goofy rear lights that look like they were pulled off of a corolla. Also, the 2.0T has a lot of issue with valve deposits since it is direct injected.
I prefer the smooth fat torque of the unique VR6 last available in the Mk4 chassis, and now only in the Passat. I still want to drive or own a Mk4 with the 3.6l eurospecsport upgrade. That must be a wild ride!

I am MkIV all the way. I had an 03 vr6 and went and traded it in for a v6 "toe rag". That was one of the dumbest things I ever did… car wise that is

One is a modern classic of automotive design. The other, a chubby impersonator. As a human being with functional eyes, I'd definitely have to choose the former.

I'll add my 5-door Mk6 for an evolution comparison she is shod with 16" snows right now.
I'm not into the lowering in my environment having one lifted might make more since. I'm with Rust on the OEM chassis engineers getting it right for the most useful setup. But I respect the enthusiasm of the Tuners weather for performance or looks even if its not to my taste.

I used to have a 2002 1.8T GTI. I really liked that car even if it did have ignition coil problems too frequently. Two doors aren't great for small children and car seats though.

I currently have a 2001 GTI GLS (1.8T) with the 4 speed VW built automatic and a 2003 GTI VR6 with the six speed manua. The two cars could not be more different. Both have stock springs but the 2001's previous owner replaced the struts with KYB-GR2's and the stock 195 65 R 15's with 205 60 R 15's and it rides like you are in a bag of rocks compared to the VR6 with 225 55 R17's and the original shocks.
In all fairness, the 2001 has 316,000 miles so it probably needed new struts but I am not a big fan of them with the stock springs.
I don't care if they only have two doors since I have two Eurovans to cart the kiddies around in if I need more room and they both have the wonderful VR6 in them: One with the same rev happy 24V the GTI has and the other with the old school 12V. The VR6 is a fantastic engine even though it sucks gas like a pig. You get the same torque from idle to full rev. The 1.8T cannot top the driveability of VR6 with its lack of any ass below 2000 RPM when the turbo finally wakes up.
