In case you do not know who Spede and Urkki are, you are probably not a Finn. The former was a comedy jack-of-all-trades, movie director and businessman, who made a large impact in the Finnish entertainment business from the early 1960s onwards. The latter was also known as UKK, and we’re talking about a man who held the Finnish presidency for decades mainly because no-one else had the stage presence to properly challenge him.
And the two elder, since-deceased statesmen are now building a low-budget cafe racer out of a 1986 Suzuki Savage somewhere near Helsinki. Or that’s what it looks like.

Spede and Urkki is a very weird YouTube series, which blends motorcycle fabricating with an off-beat sense of humor and gearhead banter. There are now over 20 episodes, all perfectly subtitled in English.
Every now and then when the building action gets too hot and the guys get too hungry to focus, they hold a Kebab Challenge, meaning there’s a competitive stunt of some sort and the loser pays for the kebab meal for the both. All the while, the Suzuki Savage bike gets dismantled, improved with Ducati and Yamaha parts, and continues to be pushed forward for readiness. And then there are reality television jabs like “We should make up a totally ridiculous deadline and start throwing wrenches! The auction is in three weeks!”
There’s a new episode every Friday, and for the past months it’s become something I really look forward to. It’s silly, but the guys seem to know what they’re doing – or make it up along the way. I really like the way the bike’s starting to look, too.

The Savage starts as almost diametrically opposite of a café racer.
