Truck Thursday – Jeep Comanche Edition

Aloha and greetings from O’ahu. While I make it a point to check the Hooniverse at least once a day while I’m on vacation, I haven’t had much time to do a lot of writing, between snorkeling, eating, going to luaus, eating, burning my white hide on the beach, eating, watching the surfers at the North Shore, eating . . . so much to do, so little time. On Tuesday morning, while making a quick stop at fivebucks for some Kona coffee (it’s that good), I spotted this cool little truck, something our resident longrooffan will surely enjoy.

I’ve seen a few Comanches before, but not around here, and I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a Pioneer in the flesh. I know that the Pioneer package was only offered from 88-92, so I’m going to split the difference and guess it’s a 90 model, although those gnarly graphics tell me it could be older. As you can see, Hawaii is brutal on cars and, well, pretty much anything made out of metal; the salt air corrodes steel like you wouldn’t believe. Brand-new cars can be seen with rust forming under the chassis, and the new stainless steel grill at our rental house has rust spots forming all over it.

I regret not getting more pictures of this interesting truck – and it is a truck, despite the unibody construction – but it disappeared when I came back out. I hope you like what you see here, at any rate.

Now, it’s time to grab some sun and work on this awesome burntan. Oh, and the barista told me that Steven Tyler stopped by for coffee that morning and is apparently in town. I’m in the wrong part of Hawaii.

I'm amazed that thing still has drip rails, especially considering how quickly they disintegrate once rigid roof racks are attached. Those were the first parts to go, followed quickly by the pillars and rocker panels once the vehicle's structure was compromised.
Argh, I want to see a wider shot; I could probably locate that particular parking lot from the background features, having spent most of my first 3 decades on the islands.
If you plan to visit the Pali Lookout area, be certain to take the meandering Nuuanu Pali Dr route on the way there for a glimpse of the lush jungle through which the fiercest battle was fought during Kamehameha's war to unify the islands. Now imagine the vicious hand-to-hand fighting which occured, using those shark tooth studded paddle/clubs which were a favored weapon – and then marvel at the views from the lookout point, where the defending warriors stood with their backs to the wind and were forced over the cliff. Whenever the islands received a tsunami warning, we'd all rush to our favorite viewing spots at that location or points along the steep highway descent to witness the potential carnage. Fortunately, the state never experienced any bad tsunamis during the time I lived there.
It's good to read the coffee plantations are making a comeback; a decade ago that cup might have cost you half again as much.
For those who aren't familiar with the history, when Iniki struck Kaua'i it devastated the coffee growing industry in the islands, which took close to 2 decades to recover. To this day, many coffee shops attempt to serve a blend of various beans as "Kona," and some estimates place the total amount of "Kona Coffee" sold worldwide as 10 times what the plantations can produce. A quick test for pure Kona beans is this: if it cost you less than $30/lb, it's not the real thing.

If you want to have cities, you've got to build roads.
    Is it Friday yet?

Since the author of this post is a fellow Ozarkian and even though he now resides in the extreme opposite corner of these fine United States from this olelongrooffan and he gets to travel to Hawaii while the farthest I get to go is pit lane at the Daytona International Speedway, I felt the need to comment on the coolness of finding another rusty ole Comanche 1/2 way around the world. I tried to find a decent image of my olebeaterpickemup truck but as I am at work all I have a my thumbdrive to choose from and this is the only one of it on it. Have fun Marcal and, again, welcome aboard.
